Eurosport commentator Simon Reed reflects on a French Open he believes will go down in history as the one of the great Grand Slams.
The final of the French Open was one the most uplifting occasions I've been privileged to commentate on.
It was in many ways the perfect end to a perfect tournament at Roland Garros.
The weather was brilliant, the crowds were brilliant and there were so many top-class matches and big stories. In my opinion, it was the best French Open for 10 years.
Roger Federer's win against Robin Soderling was greeted with so much emotion, it was extraordinary.
People have so much love for him, and for what he stands for as a person.
Of course, the fact he has experienced so much disappointment at Roland Garros also motivated fans to get behind him.
But I do find it a bit strange that Rafael Nadal wasn't treated with the same respect when he played.
Men's tennis is blessed by two top-notch blokes in Federer and Nadal and their example filters down throughout the game. Both are terrific individuals.
Ultimately Federer has been unlucky to have Nadal playing in his era. He would have won the French Open a long time ago if not for Nadal - who I believe is the greatest clay-court player the world has seen.
But strangely enough, I believe Federer's performance was probably his least impressive in clay court tennis for four years.
I still maintain he's not the player he used to be, and he probably won't get back to where he was. But you have to admire the way he dealt with the pressure in the final to make history.

I don't agree that this is the best French Open for 10 years. You feel that because Federer won.
If he finally over come Nadal in 5 set, that would be the best script.
crowds are always with the little guy, noone wants a guy creamed, the french never wanted Nadal to lose, nor did the british crowd want Federer to lose to Nadal at Wimbledon, they wanted Nadal to win though because he went close enough twice before and to achieve the impossible is the greatest feat ever.So when the underdog fairs well, fairs incredible, and go on to win against Superman, they can't do anything but stay loudly amazed and praise the victor, because the french crowd might be the fairest of all crowds.now ask Djokovic if the australian crowd was fair to him when he defeated Federer in the semis two years ago ? they almost booed him off court
Sad thing about all these so called Nadal fans is that, Federer and Nadal get along quite well, so @#$% away all you want about Federer. He has been in 19 grand slam semis straight, what does that say about talent and consistency. How many people have shown up in the Paris final four years running? Does that not say something about the skill and endurance on Fed? Nadal may be number one, and indeed may be king of clay, but Federer has shown, unlike Sampras that he is very competitive on clay in addition to mastering the US Open and Wimbledon. I dont think Sampras ever won a clay title. In a sense, I think people want Federer to act as if he is in some silly reality tv show and act up, but he perseveres in being a down to earth fellow with abundant tennis talent who just gets on with his career. Nadal has some way to go to deserve a similar reputation in tennis as his slam count shows clearly. And yes, Federer is the current greatest classical tennis player with variety of shot. Sampras could be so boring to watch.
Please give Federer a break! He is the greatest so far ... and there is more to come, you betcha. Paris, you watched and made history. But please enough of the court invasions already. I was so pissed having to recall poor Monica Seles' experience. That guy must do time.

Boow is one twisted person who needs help. Do you really think roger would want people like you as his fans.
R.I.P.
NADAL FANS PLEASE QUIT COMPARING NADAL WITH FEDERER....NADLA IS NOT ON D SMAE LEVEL AS FEDERER ONE BIT!!!!!!!!!!! THAT HE BEAT HIM ON LAY 3 TIMES DOESNT MAKE HIM A BETTER PLAYER SO PUHHHH LEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSE!
and as for the commentator dat finds it a bit strange that Rafael Nadal wasn't treated with the same respect when he played......DUDE!!!!...NADAL AND FEDERER ARE NOT ON THE SAME LEVEL AND HE DOESNT HAVE THE GRACE FEDERER HAS AND WILL NEEVR HAVE IT!!!!! AND HE WILL NEVER PLAY WIHT THE EASE WITH WHICH FEDERER PLAYS
SO ALL YALLL NADAL FANS QUIT COMPARING!!!!!!!!
I also agree with Simon Reed's summation of this year's French Open.
Roger Federer clearly deserved to win the competition because he was able to produce his best tennis when it really mattered on more occasions than the opposition.
I couldn't help feeling that Robin Soderling was happy simply to beat Rafa make the final, and hence do Federer an enormous favour.
He didn't seem as committed to win as he did previously. Maybe he was suffering from one match too many, or was a little overawed by the occasion, or maybe still, he really did want Federer to win (being such an ardent Federer fan): without him (Soderling) looking embarassing?
Notice how happy he looked & sounded during the presentation afterwards. If one had turned on the telly at this juncture one could easily have been forgiven for thinking that Federer had lost again cos he was crying, and Soderling had won because he was smiling.
I'm sure even the fickle French crowd would have preferred a Federer Nadal final....so long as Federer triumphed in a 5 set classic. Such an accomplishment would have been all the more sweeter to Federer.
It will be very interesting to see if Federer can regain the title at Wimbledon. If on the other hand Nadal was to retain his Wimbledon crown, and then go on to win The US Open - thus matching Federer's magic achievement of winning all 4 Grand Slams - I wonder what the Nadal haters will say then???
Why are so many Nadal fans so ignorant and vendictive ? A bunch of low class backward scum !!
Such bitter people on these tennis pages; you are even worse than the 'fans' on the football forums!!!!
By a mouse!
I don't think it was so much an issue of the French crowd on Philippe Chatrier being predominantly pro Soderling, and anti-Rafa...but more an issue of the fact that they absolutely stunned at what they were witnessing: i.e. a man who was apparently invincible at Roland Garros losing to an also ran.
I totally agree that Robin Soderling beat Rafa Nadal fair & square on Sunday....but to imply that this miraculous feat somehow makes Soderling a better player than Rafa is lunacy in the extreme.
Before Sunday's epic victory Robin Soderling had only actually one close match with Rafa Nadal: that was at Wimbledon in 2007: wherein Rafa was leading Soderling comfortably by 2 sets to 0, before Soderling controversially started spitefully, and disrespectfully mocking him.
Rafa was so shocked by this mockery that he lost concentration (even though he shouldn't have done), and consequently blew the next 2 sets in the process, before recovering sufficiently to close out the match 7-5 in the 5th set.
Also, Nadal beat Soderling 6-1 6-0 less than 6 weeks ago in Rome. That statistic suggests that Nadal was playing well in Rome, and Soderling perhaps either at his normal clay level, or somewhat lower?
Robin Soderling's victory over Rafa Nadal isn't purely down to better shot execution, and strategy, but also down to the fact that Rafa wasn't anywhere near his normal competitive level both mentally & physically.
If Soderling had actually found a way to demystify Rafa's game, then we would have seen evidence of this previously: save for a few unsporting antics at Wimbledon in 2007.
It would seem that this was the year The Gods finally decided to smile on Roger Federer?
Haas is mysteriously turned to Jelly - 2 points from victory. Djokovic is suddenly drained of all energy after looking a semi-final certainty. Murray is blown away by a Chiliean Hurricane, and lastly but by no means least: Superman Nadal is exposed to Kryptonite, and is floored
I understand where Reed and surprisingly many get there skeptisme from. Yes Federer have lost the last 3 years to Nadal in the final and it would have been a better final if Roger would have beaten Nadal to win the Roland Garros. But hear this: Roger was clearly the best player in the tournament and søderling was clearly the second best he proved that by backing up his Nadal fight by destroying Davydenko completly.
And people can go on by saying yearh but what if Djokovic hadn´t lost and what if Nadal hadn´t lost. But they did and they weren´t good enough to reach the final. Federer has now been in 20 grand slam finals in a row, thats just amazing.
And Reed you´re wrong you say Federer is not back at his best, just wait and se in Halle allready. He is filled with confidence and he will be so strong for the rest of the season.
congratulations Federer to win French open
with the total co-operation of opponent who also wanted Fed to win,,
such a generous competitor to encounter in a G S final ...! Hope Fed showed his appreciation
as Mr Sweden backed off to give easy passage
Hurrah No. 69 - you talk a lot of sense - unlike many on these forums. Good on you.
It might be possible that whether Federer nor Nadal will win any more Grand slams, ever...
Federer is gay
As a frenchman,I must say that I was a bit sad to see the french crowd support Soderling that much.I can tell you that Rafa is very appreciated in France,we love great athletes and nice/humble people(we love spain and its inhabitants).I was not part of those wishing Rafa's defeat in that match but I think that many of the french spectators were fed up with Rafa's mega domination for over 4 years in Paris, therefore they were backing the "weaker" player(Robin)one of the very rare players able to shake the king of clay, they wanted a new "face"to win the French Open.Furthermore, the level was high, intense and the atmosphere, electric. They were witnessing smthg incredible, they knew it,and got carried away.
