European champions Leinster have been handed a favourable draw for the 2009/10 Heineken Cup.
Leinster have been drawn in Pool 6 with London Irish, Scarlets and Brive, none of whom reached the knock-out stages of last season's tournament, though the Irish did feature strongly in the Guinness Premiership where they made the final.
"Every pool in next season's tournament is a tough one and we know that going to Brive will be extremely challenging," Leinster coach Michael Cheika said.
"The draw has thrown up plenty of potentially high-quality matches and I can't wait for us to start defending the title."
Last season's beaten Heineken Cup finalists Leicester have a more challenging route through Pool 3, which also includes Ospreys, French domestic finalists Clermont and Viadana.
Arguably the hardest task awaits those sides in Pool 5, where three-times champions Toulouse will face Cardiff Blues - beaten semi-finalists this year - Harlequins and Sale.
The draw will give the French giants a chance to avenge their quarter-final defeat to the Blues in April, while Harlequins will have to be at their best if they are to repeat their quarter-final appearance of last season.
While many will consider Pool 5 as the 'pool of death', teams in Pool 1 might beg to differ, where European specialists Munster have been drawn with French champions Perpignan, fast-improving Northampton and Treviso.
Nor will there be any easy games in Pool 4 for crisis-hit club Bath. Last season's beaten quarter-finalists are joined by Stade Francais, Ulster and Edinburgh, who finished second in the Celtic League.
In the remaining group, Biarritz will be confident of progressing from Pool 2, where they face Gloucester, Dragons and Glasgow.
The Pool 2 draw also sees former England wing Iain Balshaw, who moves to Biarritz this summer, up against his former club Gloucester.
The 2009/10 tournament features eight of the nine previous Heineken Cup champions, with only twice winners Wasps absent from Europe's premier club competition.

And Shaka... your an Idiot your thinking of Football be it English or American we don't need body armor when we get tackled by a 6ft tall 20 stone man and we certainly don't crash to the floor holding our shins crying for mummy.
GLAAWWWWSSSSTTTEEERRRRR!!!!! It's our year to shine new team, harder, better training and no Dean Ryan. Don't count us out yet!
Munster will make no mistake this year..by far the best squad. 2006, 2008, 2010..looks good.
well shaka maybe you should be playing it so @#$% hole
I'll never understand how you people get into suck a weak sport like rugby. Rugby is for vaginas
should be interesting as some big teams aint gonna make it out of the group stage. leinster will get to the next stage but without rocky i feel we wont be as strong this year. winning it though is all that counts so if we do bad we at least have that.
I cant wait for Munster and Perpigan match up, although it would have been even better to see Dan Carter at Thomond.Sadly he's gone back to New Zealand. The serious contenders are MUNSTER,LEINSTER,CARDIFF,LEICESTER,TOULOUSE. I wouldnt write off Clermont either. They had a bit of bad luck the last few years with their groups, but are a truly class side.I know i'm Irish but Munster and Leinster are by far the best teams in this tournament(the french save their best for domestic duties).Munster would beat any team in my contenders, maybe with the exception of Leinster. If Cardiff can become a stronger unit they can really cause damage, but Im gonna have to go with Munster win.
osppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppprr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrree eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Cardiff ,cardiff, cardiff ,cardiff !!!!!!!Its Cardiff BLUES !!!!!!Cardiff play in the welsh league at the proposterously named Cardiff Arms Park ( Yeah its the famous old ground , scene of many welsh international triumphs down the years. Oh hang on no its not ) This is what happens when you let the self obsessed two name their own region . Do you know, even now some commentators talk of Cardiff Blues tradition in the heinekin Cup forgetting that the Blues tradition only started recently. Same for LLanelli Scarlets ! Yes i support the Dragons but at least we didnt go for Newport Black and Ambers!! High time WRU got some balls and told the regions to get the names and (thus attitude ) sorted . EG East Wales Dragons, Ospreys ( a true region you put the WRU to shame) Glamorgan and Valleys Gorrillas ,West Wales and all up North where they dont really care whiners , oops better go for West Wales warriors
Anyway more moaning .Six groups is a farce .Lets say Dragons finished second to Biaritz .That would be a pretty good achievement .What would we get ? Nothing as surely the points would be well distributed amongst us .
Thats my moans done .Matron is caling .See you soon
Pool 1:Northampton and Munster
Pool 2:Biaritz
Pool 3:Leicester and Ospreys
Pool 4:Stade
Pool 5:Sharks
Pool 6:Scarlets
Leinster will miss Rocky and Conteponi and even Van de Linde. Need to replace theem eventhough 2 of them did not play in this years final.
hylmike it's only one from each group and then two with the most points from the rest that go through! probably from the groups with the italian teams in!!
Poor Sale, they always end up in the toughest groups every year
Should be a stroll for Munster though
My Guess
Pool 1:Northampton and Munster
Pool 2:Dragons and Biaritz
Pool 3:Leicester and Ospreys
Pool 4:Stade and Bath
Pool 5:Cardiff and Sharks
Pool 6:Leinster and Scarlets
fao roxycappo -- history suggests otherwise... please see below
2008 Munster , Sale clermont, Montabaun
2007 Clermont Auvergne, Llanelli Scarlets, Munster, Wasps
2006 Bourgoin, Cardiff, Leicester, munster
2005 Munster, Castres Olympique, Sale Sharks, Newport Gwent Dragons
Munster fans can start booking the hotels and flights for Paris.. easiest group wev had in years!
roxycappo, munster have gotten out of their group every year since 2000 or something, and they have come through much, much harder groups then this. And they qualified very comfortably last year, how were they lucky?
menace
which is why sale's group is referred to as group of death. Sale have no chance of winning that group. and because the games will be so tight between the other 3 there will be few try bonus points around, so best 2 runners up position will be unlikely to come from group 5. winners only from the group of death.
why have Sale got the group of death. Toulouse (best team in France), Cardiff(EDF energy cup winners), Harlequins (second best team in England). All of them will have their work cut out.
roxycappo who are your team ?
roxycappo munster are the highest ranked team for the past 3 years dey will be one of the favourites..they have the best fans and best squad of players..sure dey only lost to the all blacks by 3 points with a secound string team
