The former Republic of Ireland midfielder, 44, returns to management after being sacked as Oldham boss in March.

He succeeds Lee Richardson, who left the club at the end of last season after failing to lead the Spireites into the League Two play-offs.

Sheridan is joined at Saltergate by former Latics coaching colleagues Tommy Wright and Mark Crossley, meaning Richardson's assistant Scott Sellars - and a former team-mate of Sheridan's at Bolton in the mid-90s - leaves the club.

Sheridan arrives at Saltergate following three spells in charge of Oldham, with two as player-caretaker preceding his full-time spell which ended in March.

After almost three years in his permanent role at Boundary Park, Sheridan was sacked following a poor run of results - and reports of fighting between players during an outing at a racetrack - culminating in a 6-2 thrashing at MK Dons.

In total, Sheridan won 61 of his 151 games in full charge at Oldham, losing 43.
