Van Persie approves of Vermaelen

Robin van Persie is delighted Arsenal are reportedly close to signing Belgium international Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.

The 23-year-old defender is thought to be discussing personal terms with the Gunners after a fee of 12million euros was agreed between the clubs.

"It's a good thing," van Persie told De Telegraaf. "There's nothing wrong with the qualities of Vermaelen. He can play as left-back and central defender and we need this type of player."

He added: "The guys that we now have on those positions are already somewhat older."

Van Persie admits he does not know a lot about Vermaelen but added: "But our head scout does and he doesn't do such a thing out of the blue.

"He needs to see a player 30 to 40 times before a decision is made."

  1. On watching Arsenal play last season on a regular bases­ it was obvious that the only problems we had was in­ defence and the lack of an animal in midfield.
    In­ previous years Arsenal had always had a leader in­ defence and one in midfield and althoush Cesc does a­ great job other teams do not fear his physical play not­ like they did with Viera or Adams.
    I think that the­ style of footbal we play is the best in the world but­ we lack the steel in the side that we use to have and­ needed a player like Barry in the middle of the­ park.
    We need two good centre backs and someone who is­ technically and physically strong for midfield, a­ holding player. (Oh yeah, and Eto up front would be­ good too!)lol
    I hope next season we don't keep­ looking for that perfect goal all the time, after all,­ a goal is a goal and the team that scores the most,­ wins......simples

  5. I don't quite agree with Matola. It's OK we get­ Yaya, but I think Galas xter is a distraction 4 the­ club and so should go with 'disaster', nay­ silvester and Eboue. Also Richards is not the class of­ defender Arsenal needs to challenge in the premiership­ and Europe, he is too muscular and lack intelleigence.­ But seriously, we need a world class goalkeeper as­ Almunia is a fake!!!!!

  7. Arsenal should know that they can't afford let down­ fans this season. Is not all about selling and buying­ but, did you sell or buy the right player.   8. i agree with the comments regarding rosicky and­ eduardo,when tey are fully fit arsenal will be a much­ stronger attacking force,however the position that­ worries me is goalkeeper. arsenal hav had too many­ liabilities since seaman retired,go in for joe hart or­ somebody of his quality. the good times will be back at­ arsenal very soon

  9. Matola - Agreed, Yaya Tore is a class act - fast,­ strong, versatile and young. Arsenal would get years of­ quality defending from him - and it would keep Kolo­ happy. Wenger has said if the quality is out there,­ then there is funds to buy top players. Yaya is that­ player - he would cost a bit but the return on the­ investment would be worth it.

  11. Defense is exactly what we need at Arsenal. However, I­ think we still need one more defender and another­ striker and a mid-fielder. I say this not because­ quality is lacking in the team but because Arsenal­ needs more options. Injuries were what caused the lack­ of fluidity in the team this last season. Players­ should be rotated by choice and not because of injury.

Wenger need to buy Yaya Toure and we need to do our­ best to keep Galas and Kolo Toure,let Eboue and ­ Silvester find there way out of the Club and let try­ and sign Richard from Man.city,i think with quality­ Squad we going to have next coming season,surely there­ is going to be a Silverware with the young Gunns,We­ tired of not seeing our club to lift a cup for 4 yrs­ now.UP GUNNERS

Well hope hell be excellent for the arsenal, think we­ still need one more defender though and probably a­ strong experianced defensive midfielder, every other­ aspect seems to be just fine , the attack will be­ boosted by the return of rosicky and eduardo....cant­ wait for next season..Gunner 4 life
