Villa dismiss Owen reports

Tue 09 Jun, 09:47 AM

Martin O'Neill has denied reports that out of contract Newcastle striker Michael Owen has been offered a two-year deal by Aston Villa.

O'Neill is known to be an admirer of the England striker despite the 29-year-old having been hit by a succession of injuries in recent years. But the Villa manager, who is currently on holiday, has played down suggestions that the club have already made an offer to the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star.

Villa issued a statement on their official website which reads: "Martin O'Neill has dismissed stories suggesting Villa have offered Michael Owen a two-year contract."

It continued: "O'Neill has hit back after newspaper reports suggested the club were ready to hand the England striker almost £3million per season - with a further 12 month option dependent on injuries and goals."

Owen is set to reduce his wage demands after commanding a six figure salary at St James' Park.

But Villa would have to make him their highest paid player ahead of the likes of Ashley Young and Gareth Barry - before his move to Manchester City - to have a chance of signing Owen.

Owen finished as Newcastle's leading scorer last season with 10 goals but his absence for lengthy periods was a key factor in them being relegated from the Barclays Premier League as they missed his predatory instincts in front of goal.

  4. Heslop? how many times this season have you actually seen Owen? I ve seen him everytime he has played, I dont live on his passed experiences, like Owen does, in fairness he hasnt had the greatest service put when he has, his performance has been P poor, missed open chances, no pace, no body strength, no ablitiy to get behide defenders, he really is no way the player he was, he will score goals? he might if everyone else leaves the pitch.

  5. Villa will definitely be struggling in the lower reaches of the Premier next year anyway, so at least he'll be in familiar territory.

  6. If we did not go out and get Heskey last year, I would fully support Villa trying to sign Owen. But we need defense before strikers. People act like footballers never come back from injuries or a bad season to make major a major impactthe very next season. I don't want him on Villa...but I hope he signs for a Premiership team like Blackburn, Bolton, Portsmouth or Fulham he can prove his critics wrong. You can't blame him for Newcastle's demise, that was just bad management. He may be past his prime, but he has a few good years left.
If nobody in England want him...I hope Mainz 05 get him (newly promoted Bundesliga team) because I live there and I would love to see him tear it up. But that is just wishful thinking...

  7. Owen is a has been, he is a money taker ! He has never had Newcastles interest at heart, all he as had at heart is getting paid for winjing about his so called injuries.
He should be sent out on loan for a season in the conference ON THEIR WAGES that would sort the lazy little scouser out, let him see what it is like to Have to put interest in to the game to get paid. Not get paid for doing nothing.
Owen IS FINISHED and the sooner people realise that the better.

  8. michael owen is a top player he always gives a 100 and 10 per cent u cant blame one player for the relegation of a @#$% team. he is the one who has scored the most goals for newcastle this season. and he has hardly played so what does that say about him. If he had bn given more of a chance to prove him self this season he would b up there with the top goal scores for the premier league.i for one would love to see him in the premier league next season so he can show u all what he is made of and hopefuly get back in the England team were he belongs.

  12. VILLA DO NOT WANT OWEN!!! simple as that, just another has been like heskey and harewood to name few villa have sign, cheap players equate to "you peanuts you get monkeys" why do you think players like ronaldo and kaka sell for so much

  13. he's only ever scored 20 in a season once.just to warn u i gamble for a living using stats and probability ,thats how i know owen needs the money cos his horse venture is not going very well.don't want to upset u but my best bet was backing newcastle at 100-1 to be relegated after they had drawn 1-1 at old trafford

    From heslop448, on Tue 9 Jun 9:26PM
  14. Jokes aside, apart from his very early years, I'm not sure he has managed that very often. I have the odd flutter but I will take you up on your bet.

  16. we were losing every game before Shearer came in and heading one way only anyway. As for money, Shearer has been our biggest ever earner and also scored more goals for us and has the Premiership record. He was also voted 3rd in 1996 European footballer of the year. He also had to retire to end his England career or I'm sure he would have played on for another 4 years or so. If thats wrong then do we expect Kaka to be shyte now. I know what you are saying but I cant agree he did'nt try because he was being so highly paid, he just could'nt stay fit and play enough games and Iv'e explained why I think he was useless 2nd half of last season

    From john.connolly01, on Tue 9 Jun 8:36PM
  17. john do the stats before shearer u averaged nearly a point a game 29 from 30 with him u averaged just over half a point a game 5 from 8,had u not employed him and averaged as u were before he came u would of had 36 points and safety,he in theory had better players as quite a few had returned from injury, think maybe he listened to dowie to much but it has to be said his tactics especially against spurs were naff

    From heslop448, on Tue 9 Jun 8:23PM
  18. u paid bassong washers cos he was on a short contract to see if he could prove hisself so he played to earn a better one he was driven on by the chance of better wages unlike owen who couldn't risk injury or he would have no income after 30th june

    From heslop448, on Tue 9 Jun 8:18PM
  19. heslop, your 11, I held my head in my hands when Shearer brought him on. That said, the very best of them have made mistakes and I personally think Shearer will come good but we will find out better when he gets a decent chance. No manager you care to mention could have done much better with that lot and most others would also have played Owen.

    From john.connolly01, on Tue 9 Jun 8:15PM
  20. heslop, It beggers belief but Bassong is one of our lowest earners but that means we dont have to take buttons for him, we can keep him with the wages he's on. If he wants to go, as I expect he will we wont have to pay up his contract and I would expect to get over £10mil. Martins will also accept a move but I dont think their will be many more like them.
I said when Owen signed he came because we offered him the most money. If he was at the club of his choice it would'nt be us, or his next club. But I have to say when he was fit we did see him play some good football but since the Jan transfer window closed he has just kept himself out of trouble. His intention was to stay fit and prove to potential interest that he could play regularly. I know those around him were rubbish but I'm sure a player of his quality can get hold of the ball himself and do something with it. Bringing him on as a sub against Villa summed it up for me, he either played out of his skin to pay back a smidgin of what NUFC had given him or he would bottle it to avoid an injury.
