Stockport managing director Mark Maguire will pursue fresh transfer targets after failing with three separate bids for Morecambe's Carl Baker.County were prepared to pay a significant six-figure sum for the 25-year-old midfielder, who scored 11 goals last season, but their bids fell short of Morecambe's valuation.
Maguire told Stockport's official website: "We offered a significant six-figure deal but Morecambe wanted another six-figure sum on top of that.
"And although Jim (Gannon) rates Carl very highly indeed that figure would have been beyond the market value for a player of his background and experience.
"Unfortunately, though, however highly Carl is respected by Jim, it is our responsibility financially to do proper deals and the right deals.
"This means we have to walk away from it because it is not good business and that's the frustration we are dealing with because Carl would have been a great addition. But there are other targets and that's where we'll move onto now."
