ATP Tour - Top three confirmed for Masters Cup

Eurosport - Wed, 09 Jul 20:09:00 2008

Roger Federer, Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal and Australian Open holder Novak Djokovic are the first three players to qualify for the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, organisers said.

2008 Rafael Nadal cuddles Roger Federer - 0

Nadal, who ended Federer's five-year Wimbledon reign in an epic final, is the leading qualifier for the eight-man event which will be held at Shanghai's Qi Zhong Stadium from November 9-16.

"I have never managed to win it so I am really looking forward for this year's event and as always I'll try my best knowing it won't be easy," world number two Nadal said, pictured here with Federer after Sunday's final.

Nadal became the first player since Sweden's Bjorn Borg in 1980 to capture the Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles in the same season.

He has held top spot in the ATP 2008 Race standings since clinching his fourth successive Roland Garros title in June. He currently leads the ATP circuit with a 56-7 match record and six titles this season.

Following the Wimbledon final, Nadal has accumulated 955 points to lead the ATP Race. Federer, who has won the season ending event four times, is second with 685 points and Serbia's Djokovic third with 649 points.

The top seven players in the ATP 2008 Race following the Paris Masters in October qualify for the circuit finale, with one spot reserved for grand slam champions finishing within the Top 20.

  1. Last year Federer was the undisputed champion for he in comparison to Sampras did not have deserving rivals. Now they are there, and I am sure knowing Roger's attitude to personal training he will come to win at least 3 grand slams next year. He will be praised again, because of his mental strength and his true champion spirit, which the likes of Nadal and Djoker are yet to acquire.

  4. hello to all tennis lovers who log in their comments here. there is no stpping rafa now , though fed is still the best i just wissssssh djorkovic will continue losing so he can learn how to be humble . i know he is very good at tennis but i think he is not ready to be a champion yet. ameze from italy

  5. funky deedee, this all happened around about the time he had mononucleisis, which went undetected for a while. If you need to know how mononucleisis affects people, I'm not a doctor. But, Ancic was out for 6 months from mononucleisis. The greats always go through periods of depressions and elevation. This is Federer first test. He'll come through.

  6. now we are entering into the hardcourt season and Fed has a number of losses on that surface this year. Djokovic, Murray, Roddick, even Fish... no, rather than this being an easier time for him, he's back on a surface that has given him some difficulty this year. ADD to that, Nadal seems to be more healthy after the rigorous clay season and Wimbledon, than he was last year. He's taking this week to rest up rather than play Stuttgart, so I think he too will be a major factor this time of the year.
27 YEARS OLD... he IS on the other side of that pinnacle. That doesn't mean it's a cliff.

  7. Apollo Midnighter, i totally agree with you about what you said about Roger. The others must work a lot to move as good as he does at the US either. He is still as a stone you cannot move so easy. We'll have again a very tight fight at this tournament, the ambition will be stronger for Nadal i hope. Also hope to see a beautiful show.

  9. wow.. suddenly men's tennis is looking interesting again.. nadal has made inroads in to federer's arena.. so has djokovic.. without those 2 THE FED would have won 18 grand slams.. Now Nadal has set himslf a goal of winning on all surfaces.. but FED has shown he is the most consistent player on all surfaces!!

  10. Roger is a brilliant player, but i do believe that Rafa Nadal has finally knocked the stuffing and the invincibilty that Federer had, unchallenged for so long out of him.
Federer has shown a lot of vulnerability insome of his matches at Wimbledon this year, and i think that would give some of his fellow players the guts and confidence they had previously lacked when confronted by Federer.

Am not saying that Federer is finished but i do believe, that in order for Federer to win a Grand slam tournament Nadal would have to be out of the picture, th is Spanish Terrier has called time on the Swiss genius winning streak.

  11. I beleive Federer's confidence has dropped severely after his loss at Wimbledon, coupled with that at Roland Garros. Last year Djokovic put up a good fight at the US Open final, but I think this year he will win it.

  12. I'm sure Federer will win The Olympics and US Open. None of those 2 (nadal, and djoker) are as good as Federer is on hard court, losing that semifinal against Djoko at Aussie Open was the cause of that damn glandular fever that Federer had. After that Fed proved he was constant, ( 2 semis in Masters, a final in a Masters and a final at the French Open ). If you remember Mario Ancic he suffered too from glandular fever for 18 months. The infection was so severe the Croat doubted he could ever play professional tennis again.

  14. can't remember Nadal ever playing the US Open final ! what about the Australian Open ? The end of season masters ? We'll see Nadal will be oozing with confidence after winning Wimbledon, and he's a relentless player so you can never rule him out but Djokovic is also good on hard courts and newcomer Gulbis seems to be coming of age so... watch this space.
