Eurosport - Wed, 09 Jul 11:30:00 2008

'On This Week' takes a look at historic Wimbledon victories, famous footballing triumphs and some other notable feats from the dim and distant past.

boris becker 85 - 0

Roger Federer might have missed out on creating Wimbledon history but July 7 has seen two noteworthy wins.

1985: Boris Becker becomes the youngest winner of the men's singles championship - July 7

At just 17, Becker won the Wimbledon title by defeating South African Kevin Curren in four sets. Becker also became the first unseeded player as well as the first German to lift the trophy, just two weeks after winning his first top-level singles title at Queen's Club. Becker was the youngest Grand Slam winner, a record that stood for four years until Michael Chang won the French Open aged 17 years, three months. However, Becker's record as the youngest Wimbledon champion still remains.

1990: Martina Navratilova claims a record ninth Wimbledon singles crown - July 7

From the youngest to the oldest in the modern era, Martina Navratilova was 33 when she won her record-breaking ninth singles championship title in 1990, beating fellow American Zina Garrison 6-4 6-1. Venus Williams took a step closer to the record with her fifth win at this year's tournament and said it would be a "dream" to overtake Navratilova, but at 28 time is not on her side.

1998: Hosts France beat off-colour Brazil 3-0 - July 12

On to football - three World Cup finals have taken place during this week in the last 40 years. 1998 was the first to take place between the hosts and the reigning champions and is remembered for its surprising scoreline and for the tumultuous build-up. French star Zinedine Zidane took the plaudits for the victory scoring two headers from corners, but it was their opponents' star man Ronaldo who caused controversy. After a supposed 'fit' the night before the final, Ronaldo's name was left off the team sheet before he eventually took the field to put in a woefully below-par performance.

1982: Italy claim World Cup victory over West Germany

Italy secured a comfortable 3-1 win with Golden Boot winner Paolo Rossi scoring for the Azzurri.

1974: Gerd Mueller breaks goals record on way to World Cup victory

The Dutch side of 1974 impressed with their flowing 'Total Football' on the way to the final against hosts West Germany. This was the first time penalties had been awarded in a final; one to each side before Gerd Mueller grabbed the winner - a record-breaking 14th goal in the World Cup Finals.

In other sports this week:

1930 July 12th - Australian cricketer Don Bradman set a Test record with an innings of 334 against England at Leeds - 309 scored in one day.

1969 July 12th - Tony Jacklin becomes the first British golfer since 1951 to win The Open.

1922 July 9th - Eighteen-year-old American Johnny Weismuller becomes the first swimmer to cover 100 metres in less than a minute, clocking 58.6 seconds.
