Sheffield United defender Sun Jihai has left the club and returned to China after only one season at Bramall Lane.

The 31-year-old full-back joined the Blades on a free transfer from Manchester City last summer but made just 11 league starts during his 12-month stay.

"Sun found it difficult to settle here. He was living with his mother and missed his family," United manager Kevin Blackwell told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"He was a great professional and was a great example to the young players at the club. I wish him all the best."

But goalkeeper Ian Bennett has signed a new one-year player-coach deal with the Championship club.

The 37-year-old will be added to the Blades' coaching staff for next season as well as continuing his playing duties.

"He has agreed a one-year extension to his contract and started his coaching path now," Blackwell said.

"So in addition to being number two he will be working very closely with our goalkeepers in the development squad."
