Querrey progresses before rain hits

American Sam Querrey breezed to a 6-3 6-2 win over Spain's Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the first round of the rain-plagued Tennis Championships in Newport.

Third seeded Querrey advanced before rain and then a lack of light forced a number of matches to be suspended.

German sixth seed Philipp Petzschner also advanced by beating Horacio Zeballos of Argentina, 6-4 6-7(4) 6-2, and Nicolas Mahut of France beat American Amer Delic 6-4 6-4.

Fifth-seeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement was upset by unseeded American Alex Bogomolov in three sets 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Two-times defending champion Fabrice Santoro of France will be among the players taking the court on Thursday to complete the round. He faces Italian Flavio Cipolla as their match was halted in the first set with the score tied 3-3.

Seventh-seeded Kevin Kim lead France's Sebastien Grosjean 6-4 while Samuel Groth lead Ricardo Mello 7-5, 0-3 when rain stopped play.
