Shrimpers chief confirms Bailey bid

Sat 09 Aug, 03:30 PM

Southend chairman Ron Martin has confirmed Championship outfit Charlton Athletic have made an approach for midfielder Nicky Bailey. The 24-year-old was made available for transfer in June after snubbing the offer of a contract extension at Roots Hall.

Southend have already rejected an undisclosed bid from Crystal Palace for Bailey. But Martin has now confirmed Charlton's interest, although the player will play in the League One opener against Peterborough.

Martin told the club's official website: "Many of you will have read the statement on Sky Sports News about Nicky Bailey's desire to play at a higher level following the approach from Charlton Athletic.

"I know without doubt this will upset many supporters but I am asking you please not to react [against Peterborough]. I spoke with Nicky and he will be playing against Peterborough.

"This will not be a token gesture as always what you see is what you get with Nicky. That is probably why he gave the interview not appreciating it would in no way assist his cause. The best way to achieve that is by continuing to act professionally at all times. All of us should pull together for the benefit of the club. There is only one thing that counts and that is winning."
