Championship - Taylor: 'Newcastle are a joke'

Eurosport - Sun, 09 Aug 11:07:00 2009

Steven Taylor has called Newcastle United "a joke" after they entered the Championship season without a buyer or a permanent manager.

FOOTBALL Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor, who branded the relegated club a joke - 0

The Magpies head into their first game outside the top flight for 16 years at West Brom on Saturday evening and everything is up in the air.

"I've read every week that next week Alan (Shearer) is going to be named manager. Then Joe Kinnear is going to get the job, then Kevin Keegan and then Alan Shearer again. I don't get it. The club is a joke," Taylor said.

"The players are very frustrated because all we want to do is have a manager and a bit of stability. That's all we ask for.

"The new manager should be given time to do it his way and if he wants something just give it to him. The chairman, if he loves this football club, would do that. I'm devastated Alan Shearer has not got the job. As players, we haven't a clue what is going on.

Taylor continued: "Everyone thought he would be back in place. We thought it might take a couple of weeks but then Alan would be the manager.

"And that's why I missed the (U21) European Championship. He wanted me right for the start of the season and of course I was happy to do it. I have so much respect for him and whatever he says, you do it.

"He said he would be back and would do it his way. I guarantee if he was still manager now, all our big players would still be here. The chairman would have had a headache over the wage bill but whatever Alan Shearer wants, you give him. He commands that much respect and he would take us straight back up."

  1. Newcastle have been a joke since Shearer, with his highly inflated sense of self worth, aided and abetted by the short sighted hero worshipping cretins that call themselves fans, led the player revolt against Ruud Gullit and got him the jeeng-bang. From that point forward, the lunatics took over the assylum.
Newcastle are on a steady downward spiral and haven't hit bottom yet. Shearer was fine footballer, but that is all he ever will be, he's not even a decent TV pundit, and along with your other hero/legend 'walk away' Keegan, has put your club into a position that they are unlikely to emerge for any time soon. They have gone from 'sleeping giant' to 'dinosaur' since the involvement of Shearer, when are you goint to wake up to that?

  2. aw i think that is out of order. however much i hate newcastle (i hav a right to im a smoggie) i dont think they deserve whats been said by taylor. newcstle are just like any other club with fans and they are tryin to do well so their fans have something to cheer about. if other teams or yor teams deserve something to cheer about then why not newcastle?

  3. I thought you said you were injured Steven, when you pulled out of the Euro (U21), not just wanting a longer rest so was ready for THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Come on Stuart Pearce! Take action on this overrated youngster and dont pick him again!!!

  5. i do like newcastle as i used to think they were a proper football club with real fans. sadly, its looking bleak for you and i predict you'll be in league one com next season. as for the prem, it gonna take you a minimum of 5yrs to even attempt to gt close. tough luck guys but its the harsh reality. come on UTD....for the QUADRUPLE...(oh and ronaldo is gay...shhhhh)

  7. Comment 75 from Peru - I didn't know Newcastle Fans were called 'Georgies' - perhaps laugh at them once you get the terminology correct, and for the reccord, it might come as a surprise to you, but Newcastle fans who pay their hard earned money on their tickets have done so to see their local team - unlike someone viewing from afar. That's why club football came about locals paid their hard earned money into seeing their local team.
I am a Newcastle fan - for my sins - and I think it's all a bit of a palaver - Keegan 'money pit' keegan wanted to be given carte blanch transfer control - like Wenger or Ferguson - big difference - you won nothing for us - other than admiration for our entertaing football.
Shearer - great chance for him to cut his teeth in management - unfortunately the baptism by fire may have singed his confidence a bit - even in poor administrative circumstances - he can still cut his managerial teeth without a transfer kitty, and I am sure he will be given the benefit of the doubt until the club is better run. During that time he will become both stronger and more experienced.
Ashley - what can I say - a proper prat who is either an abysmal business man or one who is very spiteful. If he wants his money, get in the right manager, get us promoted then cash in

  11. Shearer isn't the answer but really, who cares? A few seasons in the Championship will do Newcastle the world of good. It'll give their blinkered fans a slice of reality pie.
    God knows they need some.

  14. It's bit rude how Mike Ashley is hated because he only had enough money to buy Newcastle, but not enough spare change to then squander 100s of millions on players! Although, I must admit, Ashley does look a bit of a STAIN.

  16. As a Sunderland supporter it causes me concern that our old rivals are in a state of flux. For goodness sake stop messing about and focus on getting the Magpies back where they belong; in the Premiership. Life is boring without the N.E. derby
