Eurosport-Yahoo! continues its countdown to the Premier League season with a look at Villa.
Manager: Martin O'Neill
Last 10 Seasons: (1999/2000 to 2008/2009): 6/8/8/16/6/10/16/11/6/6
POSSIBLE STARTING XI:
Habib Beye - Curtis Davies - Carlos Cuellar - Luke Young
James Milner - Nigel Reo-Coker - Stiliyan Petrov - Ashley Young
Gabriel Agbonlahor - Emile Heskey
BACK-UPS FROM: Steve Sidwell, Wilfred Bouma, Marc Albrighton, Nathan Delfouneso, Fabian Delph, Moustapha Salifou, John Carew, Nicky Shorey, Brad Guzan, Ciaran Clark, Craig Gardner, Eric Lichaj, Shane Lowry, Shane O'Halloran, Barry Bannan, Nathan Baker, Chris Herd, Stewart Downing
TRANSFERS:
In - Fabian Delph (Leeds United, undisclosed), Habib Beye (Newcastle, undisclosed), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough, £12m)
Out - Zat Knight (Bolton Wanderers, undisclosed), Stuart Taylor (Manchester City, free), Garry Barry (Manchester City, £12m)
POSITIVES: Martin O'Neill has continued adding personnel to a squad that proved just too thin to combine a UEFA Cup campaign with a push for the top four last season. Fabian Delph may not enjoy too much first team action initially, but he looks a superb prospect and a worthy addition to a squad full of promising English players. The much-maligned Stewart Downing is a fine Premier League player and will ease the workload on Ashley Young.
NEGATIVES: Martin Laursen's career-ending knee injury midway through last season effectively signalled the end of their Champions League challenge. Villa have yet to fill the gaping hole left by the Dane's retirement, with neither Curtis Davies nor Carlos Cuellar having impressed much last season. Gareth Barry's departure to Manchester City is another big loss in midfield.
VERDICT: The emergence of Manchester City makes a top-four finish an even taller order. While O'Neill deserves credit for building a young, predominantly-English squad, Villa could be left tantalisingly on the fringes again. 7th.

Nicky shorey wasn't the best transfer from MON so villa need a player like leighton baines to replace him and a back up centre back also get rid of reo-coker and buy someone who has more attacking qualities and maybe buy leo franco for a replacement to big brad
sidwell and shorey are truely rubbish, wake up villa fans!! its only the likes of milner, young, barry wen he was there that showed true talent

villa should sign distin and jenas . They are perfect for them
Steve, he's been strongly linked with us (Spurs) and Inter Milan and Bayern. Being linked doesn't mean a thing, if you have a bid accepted for him, Martin O'Neill will have a hell of a job persuading him to join. If he manages to pull that off, then fair play.
Karl, we'll see he's been strongly linked with Villa in the last few weeks.
Steve, Wesley Snejider will not become an Aston Villa player. He'll go to a bigger club, who are plying their trade in the Champions League.
I'm expecting at least one more signing before the end of August and that's Snejider from Real Madrid, who should end up being our Barry replacement as he's a creative midfielder. Our goalies are both excellent, midfield with a fit Petrov, Milner, Young, Downing, Sniejder and Delph to pick from is nearing one of the best in the premiership if they all play well and I can see us playing with Gabby up front in a 4-5-1 formation quite a bit, or perhaps a 4-4-2 with a supporting striker.
Either way, my only concern is defence, but once we get Young (L) and Bouma back, with Davies and Cuellar in the middle, it should be more than enough. As long as we can get a run as we did last year and not collapse in the new year, we'll have done well.
Top 6 would be a good result this year, any higher and I think tbh, we've done very well. We need some world class signings to threaten the top 4 consistently, but I do believe in the next few years we will get there.
The trouble we will have is holding onto the likes of Young. We do however have a raft of promising talent coming through the ranks as well which is good to see.
cameron w u r mad +crazy MON rocks
as a long term villan , now residing in dundee i saw a lot of carlos cueller and can not see why he did team up with lausen last season in central defence .the guy was immense for rangers a couple of seasons ago .starting him along side such a rock in central defence would only have honed his already cosiderable skills to help him adjust to the more demanding leauge.
he may not have been able to fill the hole completely when laursen had to retire ,but would have been a much more capable central defender . he seems a little wasted in his current position.
perhaps a chance missed by martin o'neil ,but apart from that he is doing a bostin job.

Even you jimmyrice should know that it took ferguson a good few years to win anything with Man Poo! MON is doing the business for villa. We've shown good steady progress since his arrival and i guarantee that in the seasons to come villa be be a thorn in the side of many a club! A title? perhaps not just yet, but a trophy certainly very soon! With the superb Randy Lerner at the helm and the way MON is looking to bring thru kids (remember Fergusons - scholes, giggs, nevilles etc) there are serious foundations being laid on which the future success of the club will not only be built, but sustained!! UP THE VILLA! (villa to finish top 6 again)
Nice blend of youth of experience, I would start Carew ahead of Heskey, Bouma somewhere in defense and Downing in the first team too...This team is capable of challenging for a champions league spot
cameron w u r an as s hole
The most odious set of fans in the country; they deserve Jack Siht and Jack Siht is hopefully what they will get!
haaaahaaha so deluded no wonder birmingham is such a sespit
Jimmyrice man u are champs again - You just prove the point Man U fans know nothing about football.
@ 2, friedel is a quality keeper, what are you talking about. sure, he aging, but hes still miles ahead of kuszak or foster, the only options manure has now. villa do need a quality defender and midfielder, with those they could really push arsenal this season. we're winning the title tho
