US Open - Ruthless Federer ends Murray dream

Eurosport - Tue, 09 Sep 13:11:00 2008

Roger Federer clinched his fifth successive US Open crown and a 13th Grand Slam title with a 6-2 7-5 6-2 victory over British sixth seed Andy Murray.

Federer - 0

The Swiss second seed breezed through the opening set and held off a Murray fightback in the second before wrapping up victory in one hour 51 minutes.

Federer, beaten twice by the Briton in their first three career meetings, become the first man since American Bill Tilden in 1924 to triumph five times in a row in New York.

The win was Federer's first Grand Slam title of the year, moving him to within one of the record 14 held by American Pete Sampras.

Murray, who shocked Spanish world number one Rafael Nadal in four sets in the previous round, had been bidding to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam since Fred Perry won the US title in 1936.

The sixth-seed Scot, playing in his first Grand Slam final in blustery conditions on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, saved one break point in the fourth game before holding for 2-2.

Federer held for 3-2 and then broke the 21-year-old in the sixth when Murray hit a forehand wide.

The Swiss looked the more assured early on and his greater aggression helped him to another break in the eighth game when a Murray backhand sailed wide to give him the opening set in 27 minutes.

Federer, 27, held easily at the start of the second and a brilliant forehand winner gave him a break for 2-0.

Murray looked in real trouble but he smashed a forehand return winner to move 40-0 up on the Federer serve in the next game and clinched the break with a superb backhand pass.

After holding for 2-2, the Scot again went 40-0 up on Federer's serve but the Swiss got himself out of the trouble, with the help of one missed line call that would have given Murray the break.

Games stayed on serve until 6-5 when Federer ripped a forehand pass down the line to snatch the second set.

Murray smashed his racket into his bag in frustration and at two sets down, the energy went out of his game and his will was broken.

A netted forehand gave Federer an early break in the second game of the third set and he then repeated the feat two games later before holding serve to lead 5-0.

Murray got on the scoreboard by holding in the sixth game and Federer then showed a few nerves as he failed to serve out.

A double-fault by the Scot handed Federer a match point but Murray saved it with a backhand volley winner.

Federer forced a second chance, though, and clinched it when Murray's attempted reply to an overhead from the Swiss found the net.

  3. To all who misunderstood me:

I am not trolling the forums, I am not saying that I am perfect, and I feel (if anything) offended that you think I am. How is it that if you care about your own language and how it is used you are suddenly dubbed a snob?
What I am saying is that if you are writing to an audience, it should not be left to that audience to pick apart what you, as their author, mean to write. It is up to *you* to do that before you publish it. I could not understand what was meant in some places in this article -- and as the little header above this box says "comment on this article", I thought that's just what I would do. If you want to take liberties with me, please *try* to do it respectfully. :)
Yes, jargon *does* have its place, but the idea is not to use it so much that it alienates its readers from what the author means to say. That is the point I was trying to make (and yes, I grant you: I went over the top), and if you have read both of John Humphrys' books (Lost for Words; Beyond Words) then you will, hopefully, understand what I meant.

  4. For the last seven months I felt that Federer's forhands and backhands weren't as strong and played in the middle of the court and were short, his going for lines missed almost everytime, especially against Nadal, were the loopholes in Fed's game during the past months which were never winessed earlier and his opponents took advantage and held together to bring the king down. But lately as apparent in the US Open he was regaining his masterful touches. Earlier this year, Federer never looked relaxed but tense. But during this open he was gaining his composure and looked more relaxed. I can say all but.."King is Back".

  5. Federer has been a wonderful & devine spectacle that tennis court has ever witnessed, never in earlier ages and maybe never will be?!! Nadal's forte has always been his physic, speed and stamina and most importantly- Superb and undauntable mental strenth. And for the sports world of this decade, especially the tennis fraternity is immensely fortunate to witness the Fed-Nad rivalry, if continues may go upto eternel heights. For me Fed is superior to anyone borne in terms of tennis skill and sense, it is so delighting ot see Roger playing. He brings to the court feelings of complete freedom, less care and mesmerizing grace. It is fitting that Roger lifted the US Open trophy convincingly at the expense of Andy, but I feel same outcome would have been with any other opponent provided Roger did not lose focus. After almost a whole year of struggle we all rejoiced and celebrated with Roger his successful annexation of the 13th slam. If he continues 're sure he will have his hands on the French slam very soon, be in 09.

  9. To Mr Jamesscarb, from his namesake James W. esq.

US Open – Mr Federer, in an dour and unrelenting humour, puts an end to Mr. Murray’s dream.

Roger Federer has achieved his fifth successive United States of America Open Tennis Championship trophy and thirteenth “Grand Slam” title with a win over British sixth seed Andy Murray. The former won the match by 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.
The Swiss second seed quickly won the first set and then resisted Mr. Murray’s vain attempt to fight back in the second before reaching victory in one hour 51 minutes.
…. Mr. Murray, who unexpectedly defeated the world’s best player, Sr. Rafael Nadal, in four sets in the previous round, had been hoping to become the first British man to win a tournament of the four which are commonly understood to constitute the so-called “Grand Slam” since Mr. Fred Perry won the above-mentioned United States championship in 1936.
…. Mr. Federer successfully completed his service game to reach 3-2, and then in the next game, the sixth, with Mr Murray serving, was able to win the last and definitive point when Mr Murray hit the ball over the sideline with a forehand stroke…. This is too, too sick-making chappies, I just can’t go on don’t you know. Jargon has been around since @#$% Habilus grunted his first semi-articulated syllables. Some of us haven’t come very far since then, I agree. Some Greek chappie called Plato complains bitterly about that in a ghastly tome called The Republic, and you should see what good old Ben Jonson got up to in The Alchemist. Gave the blighters a right wallop on the old knap. Actually, jargon has its place, and that place is on ephemeral virtual sports rags like this one. What would we do without it? Read about boxing in the Queen’s English?

  10. Murray achieved only one thing: beating Nadal. Nothing else. So stop talking about him as he is about to be number one. Many players before him reached the finals just do dissipate into the deep dark bottom of the rankings.

you seem to disagree with what i said, its just an opinion, it doesnt have to be right! But what I said its possible to hapen!
Or do you agree with Murray deserving to be #2 after Roger?

  12. Jamesscarb has got 5 votes in favour and only 1 against. It's the end of the world as we know it. You have to agree with him, of course. I mean, when I first saw the headline, I just presumed that this "ruthless" guy Federer (whoever he may be) had taken out his granny with a lump hammer and had been detained by the police whilst dancing on her grave singing "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath and subsequently released on bail to "end Murray's dream" by hammering six-inch (with a hyphen - compound adjective James old boy) nails into Murray's heart. He's not saying he's a grammar snob, no doubt following a tradition set by the late great Jenghis Khan, who never went on record as saying that he was likely to staple the intimate parts of those who disagreed with him to the nearest available dinner table. Given that my posts are insufferably long and tedious, I feel obliged to thank Jamesscarb for making me feel a whole lot less guilty in this respect. (P.S. - due acknowledgements to Joseph O' Connor - please don't take me to court). Thanks for the fun comment (no hyphen) James. CHEERS

  14. ipekmurat Murray #2? why? because he reached ONE grand slam final?
Nadal has 8 titles this year 2 of them GS and reached the semis in the other 2 GS has 3MS titles and reached 1 final...
    Before Murray is Novak!!! ALWAYS
And this year ranking may well end in this order
    #1Nadal
    #2 Djokovic
    #3 Federer
because Federer must defend lots of points till the end of the year, many more than the other 2! Last year end was very bad for Novak and he may as well do better this time! Even tough i believe Federer to mantain at least his 2nd place as he as awaken in this US open. BUT LETS WAIT AND SEE

    VAAAAMOOOOOOOOOS RAFA

  17. Congrats on a terrefic tournament Murray, your day will come soon enough.
And ipekmurat Nadal 3rd? Have you not seen him play this year he has been immennse as Federer has started to tire. And based on this season (and a lot of lasts) He deserves to be number 1, Federer didn't even stand a chance on his favourite surface (grass) never mind clay! Federer will be number 2 for a long time to come, as will Nadal be no. 1. Murray worthy of 4th, and as soon as he gets his first grand slam, 3rd. Not saying that Federer is bad though, currently, with his past, i would have to say best of all time.

    Well done Murray.

  20. I must agree with Segun S (325). I don't know what was wrong with Murray; Maybe he was tired because of he couldn't have as long relax time as Roger had. Maybe he'd lost too much concentration on Roger's "missed" balls. We all saw as he tried to talk with referee about them. Maybe his style of gameplay, which was effective against Rafa, was just read by Roger, as he was pretty well prepared for this kind of play. Maybe Roger just had stronger will for winning, as a satisfaction for "bad" season (Australian open semi-final, Rolland Garros Final, Wimbledon final= and we talk about "bad" season :) ). Maybe it was a little bit of all. Maybe if Rafa would have played against Roger, he would not win. Who knows ? It was Murray who played yesterday and lost against ruthless Roger. All we know is that king is back :)

We can sit and wait for great 2009 season, more breathtaking Nadal- Federer duels, more shocking results. That's tennis :)
