US Open - Murray blitzes Young to make quarters

Thu, 08 Sep 18:53:00 2011

Andy Murray charged into the quarter-finals of the US Open with a 6-2 6-3 6-3 win over American wildcard Donald Young.

TENNIS Andy Murray during his US Open fourth-round win over Donald Young on Sept 8 - 0

Britain's world number four wasted no time booking his place in the last eight after the previous two days at Flushing Meadows were washed out by rain, wrapping up the victory in just under two hours.

"I was a little bit frustrated in the middle of the second set because I was returning well, hitting the ball well from the back of the court and was giving him chances that I shouldn't have been just because of not serving well enough," said Murray.

The two-day rain delay forced tournament officials to hastily rearrange the schedule, leaving Murray facing the daunting prospect of having to win four matches in four days to win his first Grand Slam title.

"It's not ideal (too play three days in a row) but that's what you have to deal with. You've just got to get on with it," he added.

"You've just got to try and embrace the situation and do all the right things to get yourself ready if you have to play four matches in four days. But I'm still a long way from having to play four matches in four days."

Muray will face big-serving John Isner in the last eight after the tall American took three tie-breaks beat France's Gilles Simon 7-6 3-6 7-6 7-6.

Despite his reputation for holding serve, and the need for three tie-breaks, Isner was broken four times, twice apiece in the first two sets.

But roared on by a partisan New York crowd, he found his rhythm and unleashed 26 aces on his way to victory.

Isner said was expecting a tougher match from Murray.

"I played him in the Australia Open in 2010 and he beat me pretty easily," Isner said. "He would kind of take the air out of the ball and hit a lot of short angles and got me moving.

"I'm going to have to change a couple things up. He's one of the best returners in the game, so I'm going to have to serve my best. When I do get my chances on the return, I will have to take them."

In the men's doubles tournaments Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchings were made to wait for a conclusion to their quarter-final match against fifth-seeded Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi after rain interrupted play.

The match was intriguingly poised in the third set with the British pair 5-6 down, but 30-15 up when organisers decided to postpone the clash late on Thursday with the winners having to play again on Friday.

  2. #64 Duncan.yes I agree, even to this day my son does not believe that England has won the world cup, he asks if it was in the 'ancient times' I tell him it was in black and white telly. he gets 1066 mixed up with 1966, but I have to remind him they lost the 1066 cup ho ho!. but they have digitally improved the colour to makeit appear as if it was not so long ago, but even I love to see the great Bobby Moore being carried aloft, but to think a few months later Scotland would play them off the park, and Jim Baxter playing keepy uppy with the ball. ah great memories.

  5. dear jill s..give up while you are getting beat, (years of drubbings on the battlefield) haha! .I think its you lot that had that, we were always vastly outnumbered, but still sent you home many many times (fact). even the Romans could not beat us. and on the last battle on British soil, (culloden) you could not even win that without Scottish help, WE (the scots regiments) had to escort you incase you got lost, and had to show your poncy soldiers how to fight the highlanders, but typical of the English to claim the glory. haha! ..yes its all great fun, we love the banter, thats what makes us Great Britain..

  6. #61 sorry mate. the people did not accept the Union, you had to bribe the land owners to get that done. and stop going on about Edward, we got rid of him also, then we were back to having our own king. and james the 6th should tell you something.we had 6 before you have 1. yes I agree Edward was a Normon,he could hardly be English, he took all your land off you,and gave it to Normans. Scotland to this day still have their Laws and education, because we were never in the long term beaten by the Normons, we invited their Knight to join the Scottish Knights, but it is ironic that our Norman land owners with the helpl of the Scots fought your Normons..and you are taking a giant leap from Normons to a British parliament...beleive it or not we hepled you do that also. (culloden). or do you not know that also?

Oh dear, I am so sorry for your perceived insult. To harbour this bitterness since 1967 is not very good for your health. You do not need to be so sad and miserable. It does not make you right!

  18. Celtic - first British team to win a european football tournament
Aberdeen - a small provincial team who won the European cup under Sir Alex.

Bill Shankley, Mat Busby, George Graham, Fergie, -------- an endless list of managers who have developed the game in England.

England claims to have the oldest international football team - How can it be international if there is only one team - Surely the opponents, Scotland, must be at least, the same age.

  19. Jill S: "Just wish they were not so touchy and had a sense of humour" How hypocritical are you?
Your point is EXACTLY why so many people post bile and hatred towards Murray with his infamous "anyone but England" comment. This comment was made after he took a hammering about Scotland so sarcastically said what he did. If English people "were not so touchy and had a sense of humour" they would have seen why he said it and perhaps would have said the same thing in his situation. Then again, I don't expect you to investigate things for yourselves. Your nation appears to believe anything and everything your tabloids spew at you.
Go and search "henman debunked murray" on youtube and you'll see.
I just wish the English people "were not so touchy and had a sense of humour".

  20. #67 Jill. So the Scots are no good at team games! I'm old enough to have watched England win the World Cup in 1966 and we have never been allowed to forget it. I also watched England v Scotland at Wembly in 1967 when the nation that is no good at team sports humiliated the World Champions. Then, to add insult to injury refused to hand over the World Cup!!!!!!!. Don't say it was a long time ago because it is still the case that whenever an England football runs on the park it is only a matter of time before 1966 is mentioned, never 1967
