Bolton Wanderers have been drawn against favourites Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup group stages while Tottenham Hotspur will face their opponents in the 1984 final, Anderlecht. Everton have the easiest draw of the three on paper and Aberdeen one of the hardest.
Bayern, who usually compete in the Champions League and won the elite European competition in 2001, struggled last season and went on a spending spree in the summer.
They added Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and Franck Ribery to their squad among others and already lead the Bundesliga by five points having gone the opening nine games of the season unbeaten.
The Trotters will also face former European champions Red Star Belgrade of Serbia, Portuguese club FC Braga and Greeks Aris Thessaloniki in Group F.
Spurs will face Anderlecht, who they beat on penalties in '84, in Group G as well as Liga outfit Getafe - making their European debut - Hapoel Tel Aviv and AaB Aalborg.
Belgian club Anderlecht were later found to be guilty of bribing the referee in their '84 semi-final against Nottingham Forest. They have won both the UEFA Cup and now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup in the past.
Everton will face Dutch team AZ Alkmaar, Russia's Zenit St Petersburg, Nuernberg of the Bundesliga and Greek Cup holders Larissa, conquerors of Blackburn Rovers in the final elimination round.
Scottish club Aberdeen have perhaps the most difficult task ahead. Greek giants Panathinaikos, Russians Lokomotiv Moscow, Liga team Atletico Madrid and Copenhagen of Denmark are all in Group B with them.
