Premier League - Bentley: Spurs are a joke

Eurosport - Thu, 09 Oct 12:54:00 2008

Tottenham midfielder David Bentley admits the Premier League's bottom club have become a laughing stock.

2008-2009 Tottenham Hotspur David Bentley - 0

Spurs have claimed just two points from their first seven matches - their worst start to a season since 1912.

Manager Juande Ramos, having been in the job for just under a year, is under increasing pressure while questions are being asked of sporting director Damien Comolli's activity in the transfer market, allowing experienced strikers Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe to leave without finding suitable replacements.

"I know people are having a laugh at the fact we are bottom of the league at the moment but it's up to everyone at the club to stop the jokes," said Bentley.

"We're not happy with what has been happening. You cannot hide from the situation but what we need are a team of leaders who take responsibility. We have to grow as people.

"We have more than enough good players at Tottenham to get us out of this situation and I give my word that we will."

Bentley, who moved to White Hart Lane from Blackburn in the summer for £15million, does not regret the switch to north London and is backing Ramos to turn things around.

"I'm fully behind him, 100 per cent," the 24-year-old told The Sun.

"I still love being at Spurs and I don't regret joining the club for one second.

"I know I haven't been at my best but I haven't become a bad player in a fortnight. The manager believes in me."

  6. Headline is truly joke. Ramos is good manager, but all the things Spurs management did was Joke. The way how Jol departure and Ramos arrival from Sevilla, show the lack of supportive spirit from Spurs management. It's not surprise then many players left, and now Spurs just like a brand new team. It's abt time, Spurs is 2 months behind the competition.

  8. Ray S - what a load of tosh. Yes defoe was loyal yes he was a great player BUT would you have left Berb or keane out to play him from the start! Wise up - Defoe would be great to have now but Jol had it right = defoe was our third striker back then!

  9. all those ppl who think tottenham will be relegated are fools they will finish in the top 12 at least they av the players 4 a top 6 finish bently is class and by the way dis is coming from an arsenal fan i think the 2 strikers are dodgy tho and who says dos sqantos is brilliant i watched the other day he was poos give him a chance we shall c arsenal 4 life

  10. david.g - just cast your mind back and think how many times Martin Jol played Defoe from the start, maybe 10% maximum. The lad's loyalty to Spurs went out of the window long before Ramos came on the scene.
I don't agree with all the comments about Martin Jol, he was a poor man manager, he had his favourites and disregarded the others. He couldn't see what a little star in Defoe he had, he let the lad go months ago, long before he signed for Pompey.
Just ask Defoe if he would ever sign for Martin Jol again, I think we know the answer!

  11. More headline twisting by the media, what bentley says and how it is headlined are totally different, it is little wonder that Kinnear lost his rag with them. In my opinion the media are 80% to blame for the aggro in the game, they love to stir up hatred and disloyalty.
I do believe, however, that Spurs ceased to be the great club they once were when the club was put on to the stock market. They signed a player called PROFIT at that timeand he has remained with them ever since. The club has become, thanks to Levey and Enic, a financial vehicle and little has been invested on the pitch in years. Successive managers have had to make do with signing unknowns, promising youngsters who never materialise, or ineffective mid-price players. Apart from Klinsman I cannot recall one other superstar in the last 12 years or so who has turned the playing fortunes around.
I hate to see and hear Spurs derided by cynical bigmouths as I can remember what great football they once played ( the Spurs v Manu games were always classics) but in a way I hear their message. Spurs will never aspire to greatness again if they continue in their current format, Levey needs to go and take his disinterested money men with him, then maybe.....?

  12. Keane best days were behind him when we sold him.Slowed right down and lacked goals from CC onwards. We got a terrific price for him.No it was selling Defoe that caused the start of spurs problems.Bent for Defoe???Playing 5 in midfield is daft as it's congested and confused. Not playing Dos Santos is crazy.Ramos is the joke, not spurs

  13. HEY KATHY WAMAN YAY @#$% YAR FACE YAR A DIRTY WEE SCRUBBAR. YAY LEAVE TATTENHAM ALANE DAY YAY HARE MAY. I HAY A WEE SAFT SPAT FOR TATTENHAM. THON BENTLEY BYE LACKS A BIT TASTY. IM A GAYLORD YAY SEE.

From dannysbac, on Thu 9 Oct 9:01PM
  14. Did they really think that selling Keane and, worse, Berbatov would be easy to compensate? I know it's tough to keep a player who wants to go (Berbatov made that clear), but Tottenham had only one tactic: Give Berbatov the ball and let him do the trick. They played poorly when Berbatov was injured. A tactic should never depend on one player.

  19. I don't know how many people were aware of Giovani Dos Santos before he arrived in England, but this guy is hot property. It is an absolute travesty that the Mexican isn't a regular starter in that Tottenham team and it really makes no sense to exclude him, especially with the team crying out for a spark in the final third.
    with love the welsh yid

  20. Spurs are the new Derby. They are on target for fewer points than Derby got last season. However, I still think Spurs can realistically stay up but it will be extremely tough now.
