Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was sharply criticised by Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for resting key players such as Franck Ribery and Bastian Schweinsteiger in that match. They both came off after an hour when Bayern led 2-1.

Stuttgart will be trying to regroup after their early elimination from the Champions League on Wednesday with a 4-2 loss at Lyon. They lost all four of their Champions League matches and were outscored 10-3.

Hamburg midfielder David Jarolim, suffering from a knee injury, is still a question mark for their visit to Schalke after missing their last match against Hertha Berlin. Coach Huub Stevens said a decision would not be made until late on Friday.

Hamburg may be without Belgium defender Vincent Kompany, who attended his mother's funeral in Belgium on Wednesday and also missed last week's match against Berlin.

Schalke will have midfielder Rafinha back in their line-up after a thigh muscle injury suffered in their Champions League match against Chelsea proved less severe than first thought. But they will be without Mesut Ozil, who has an ankle injury.

Coach Mirko Slomka will also be without defenders Marcelo Bordon (suspended), Christian Pander (knee injury) and Dario Rodriguez (leg injury). Also out injured are Kevin Kuranyi and Levan Kobiashvili.

Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Doll threatened to drop one or two players to the bench for the match at home to Eintracht Frankfurt but did not name any names. Striker Nelson Valdez is considered a candidate for the bench after struggling lately.

Werder Bremen will be without midfielder Torsten Frings (knee injury) for their match against Karlsruhe.

Germany midfielder Tim Borowski and defender Clemens Fritz are also struggling to find their form after returning from injury.
