Championship - Swansea down Burnley

Eurosport - Sat, 10 Jan 19:34:00 2009

Two goals from Jason Scotland gave Swansea a 2-0 Championship win against 10-man Burnley at Turf Moor.

Jason Scotland of Swansea - 0

Trinidad and Tobago striker Scotland hit a 35th-minute penalty after he was hauled down by Michael Duff, who was dismissed for the professional foul.

Scotland made sure of the win with five minutes remaining after he was left with a simple finish following some superb work on the left by Mark Gower.

The Swans were the better side and deserved to take the lead when Angel Rangel played Scotland clean through with a delightful ball with the outside of his foot.

Northern Ireland defender Duff pulled him back and was promptly given his marching orders.

Scotland smashed the spot-kick past Brian Jensen into the roof of the net and from that point on Burnley retreated into their shells in an attempt to frustrate the visitors.

Prior to the goal, Swansea had good chances through Rangel and Darren Pratley, while Chris Eagles impressed for the hosts in flashes.

The second half, however, was a tepid affair with Swansea unable to break Burnley down despite the man advantage.

The Clarets occasionally threatened on the break but Roberto Martinez's men were always in control and eventually exploited the space afforded to them by Owen Coyle's side to wrap up the win late on.

Gower, who had impressed throughout, raced down the left wing and waited for Scotland's late run before picking out the perfect pass that he converted with ease.

  2. yes it was a soft penalty and even softer red card but with a small squad and injury problems why put yourself at risk?-7 reds now-many of them soft but mainly central'on goal issues'-shouldnt this tell us something? like maybe we're too square at the back and looking for flags that usually arent forthcoming- as an aside-WELL DONE SWANS-if we're gonna lose lets at least lose to a team playing decent football-i hope you guys are proud of your team and good luck for the rest of the season- as for us- time to stand up and be counted (mainly to see if we have enough to put out a team on the pitch)-

  4. yeah, this is a dodgey report if i ever did see one. ive seen worse fouls get yellow cards or no card shown at all, it was a poor poor decision to at least send him off. the penalty, well maybe it was. and in the second half Burnley took the game to Swansea and made them sweat. if anything it was Swansea who retreated as they took a beating from 10-men Burnley.

it was on tv, try watching the games if your going to report on them

  5. Did you watch the game, or is your report based on what you think happened. I have never seen a softer penalty given this season. Yes Swansea were attacking more, they did not however pose a goal threat though until the ref decided he wanted to be a tv star. As for "retreated in there shells", Burnley posed more of a threat after the goal than before it.
