Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan is determined to extend Michael Owen's contract at St James' Park.
There has been speculation about the striker's future almost from the moment he joined the Magpies from Real Madrid in August 2005.
Owen has been linked with several Premier League clubs, particularly Manchester City in recent months, even though he has stressed he wants to stay in the North East.
His current contract does not expire until next summer but Keegan is keen to open talks over a new deal.
Keegan confirmed: "It goes without saying that I want him to stay. We have to sit down with Michael at some stage.
"It is something we need to discuss. How long is left on his contract will make it an issue."
Owen has been badly hit by injuries since his move to Newcastle and has only made 25 starts for the club.
But Keegan is confident he can bring out the best in the England international if he stays fit.
"Newcastle fans have not seen enough of Michael because of things beyond his control," said the manager.
"He has never had a run of games. The first stage is getting the games under his belt."
