Transfers - Gossip Shop: Becks move hitting snag

Eurosport - Tue, 10 Feb 07:26:00 2009

David Beckham's proposed permanent move to Milan from LA Galaxy could be hitting a snag.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Serie A Milan Beckham - 0

Milan are willing to pay a reasonable fee of around £6.7 million for Becks, who has been a revelation since his short-term loan started at the Rossoneri in January.

But Galaxy want a Manchester City-esque amount for a 33-year-old, speculated to be more than twice Milan's offer.

"We made an offer to Galaxy and they didn't accept it," Milan general manager Adriano Galliani told Sky Italia. "However, there's a willingness to talk between a party who's making an offer, which is Milan, and another who's evaluating it."

Galliani also praised Beckham's politeness and professionalism, although the examples of his good behaviour - cleaning his own kit, packing his own bags and "opening and closing the bottle of water and returning it, without throwing it away" - perhaps owe more to his obsessive compulsive disorder than being 'old school'.

Liverpool misfit Andrei Voronin is on loan at Hertha Berlin and could be set for a shock return to Anfield with the club desperately short of strikers following the sale of Robbie Keane.

"We want to have talks with Berlin quickly. I know my agent has been talking to Liverpool recently," Voronin said.

"I still have a contract at Anfield. They've just sold Robbie Keane. Up until he joined last summer, I was getting games for Liverpool.

"They have a shortage of strikers now. I would enjoy staying at Hertha. And even if I am not to stay on, I will give my very best until the very end."

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has called on Zamalek to decide just how much striker Amr Zaki is worth.

The 25-year-old is on loan from the Egyptian Premier League club, who are notorious for changing their demands from one day to the next.

"There will be a time when we ask Zamalek exactly what the price is," Bruce said. "It was £12m four months ago, at the start it might have been £6m.

"The ball is in their court: there will be dialogue."

Zaki has been a big hit at the JJB although his goals have dried up in the winter months so perhaps the revised price will be somewhat lower than when his stock was highest in the autumn.

Wigan are also chasing Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Michael Kightly in anticipation of Luis Antonio Valencia's summer exit.

Ecuador winger Valencia is expected to move to one of Europe's top clubs at the end of the season after both he and Wigan rejected a loan bid from Real Madrid in January.

Kightly, 23, has set the Championship alight with his displays for Wolves but the club are top of the table and likely to be playing Premier League football anyway next season.

One man who will be staying at Wolves is wide-man Matt Jarvis.

The 22-year-old former Gillingham player has signed a three-and-a-half year contract to stay at Molineux.

Michael Mancienne, who was on loan from Chelsea earlier in the season, is one man who will not come back to the Midlands: Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari wants to keep him as cover at Stamford Bridge.

  2. With the money Beckham earns and has why doesn't he buy himself then rent himself out to whomever he chooses. He can offset his ourchase of himself as a tax loss too. The he can play for AC and England and forget the fifth rate soccer joke called the MLS.

  5. In reply to Ben Freeman,
Becks was considered too old, too slow by the last England manager but here we are two years on and Beck is still making a difference in Milan 'big time'! Not just a marketing machine (which he always has been) but no better player anywhere to put those crosses in that lead to goals. Our new England manager knows this and that he is still in the England team. Bently was the new blood to replace him but he is not in the same class by a mile! Who is? no-one it seems.
Carry on with your magic Beckham & win the World Cup for us - you are and always were a class act!
Man. Utd took a long time to recover when he left and I still think it was a bad move from 'The Red Nose' manager! so was the loss of Van Nistelrooy, who was probably better than the french seagull chaser!!!

Beckam you carry on thrilling us with your remarkable skill son!

  6. The leading factor in Beckham wanting to play in Milan is: Beckham believes he is a Superstar model, and milan is the home of fashion afterall. Beckham could be the best right back England ever had, if only somebody would play him there behind the primary winger/midfielder.

  8. So, the Beckham marketing machine roles on eh!!!! Sure he's a class act, professional, polite, good role model, good looking etc but I can't help but think that his Brand Managers, PR staff, Agent etc are making sure that they coin their share of his particular gravy train. My opinion, humble as it is, is that the Becks Brand is all about cash and kudos and nothing about football. I happen to think he's a good player, not quick, can't beat players, but a great set peace specialist and passer of the ball. Not enough to warrant the kind of attention he receives though and not enough to keep younger player out of the England set up. Well done Beckham, I'm grateful for what you've done but time now to retire to LA and plan the next stage of your world dominance..................

  10. During his stint in Spain Beckham showed that he now does his defensive duties well too, an element that was lacking earlier in his career. He's known primarily for his dead ball delivery, but nearly all players have only a limited set of skills at which they excel, but Beckham excels SO well at those he does possess that he can still make a fine contribution to the England team.

From Paul, on Tue 10 Feb 5:39AM
  11. at 33 becks is still one of englands best...that says Beckham is genuine talent and also England needs to wake-up...look at spain..the transition...in legendary (raul..guti..puyol)..to potential legends in (torres, iniesta, fabregas, ramos)...england...after, (becks, lampard, gerrard, rio and terry) there is really nothing..(maybe ashley young, walcott, micah richards)..wont even pick rooney, much hype...little goals...more world-class english players should be produced!!!!...not one season wonders, i ve seen jack whilshere..maybe his generation will have more about them than this present ones...

  14. Hey! Becks is worth almost double what ronaldinho and Flamini cost Milan. A player who's played in Old trafford even on loan is better than cheap.

  16. Send his @#$% back to Europe. He did nothing MLS anyway. He failed to help the Galaxy to even make the playoffs. He's better surrounded by very good players and not very good other than that. Laters

    From zitrostars0920, on Mon 9 Feb 10:44PM
  17. Really taff? Then why has Capello been selecting Beckham to play for England over a year since his move to LA? (He even reinstated him as captain for one game.)
Clearly Capello thinks that a match-fit Beckham is still good enough to play for England.
The problem is that, over in the US, the M.L.S season is rather short so Beckham has come to play in an active European league during the US off-season, in order to keep match fit - else he would probably lose his England place. So he's over at AC Milan on a temporary (pre-season) loan which could be extended.
Where did you read that Beckham wants to go into management later on? Are you just making stuff up to fit your theories?
"I actually believe that he has been good for British football" - What a remarkable insight you have into this game.

From Macaroo Mac, on Mon 9 Feb 10:34PM
  18. Beckham has to stay in Milan if he wants to have any chance of a say in the World Cup. He does not seem to be doing too bad there and the experience will help him in management. He is not the brightest light switched on tonight, but is much richer than me, and he will be a successful manager here in due course as he knows the game throughout.. His stupid, vain, boring, self obsessed wife can stay in LA with all her clothes as far as I am concerned. He could in fact buy himself out if he wanted. I think he must go for it. I actually believe he has been good for British football and we should thank him for bringing it on.

From taff, on Mon 9 Feb 9:40PM
