Premier League - Giggs signs United contract extension
Fri, 10 Feb 10:36:00 2012
Manchester United have announced that Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford.
Giggs, 38, will now enjoy a 22nd season as a United player and is committed to the club until the end of the 2012-13 campaign.
The Welsh midfielder made his debut for the club in March 1991 and has represented United on 898 occasions while amassing a huge collection of medals, including two Champions Leagues and 12 league titles.
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Ryan is a marvellous player. In many ways, he epitomises all my teams here at United: he has constantly re-invented himself, adapted to the changing nature of the game and retained that desire and hunger for success.
"In every training session and match, he is the example for others to follow. The young players in the dressing room have a great chance to learn from a player who will continue to break records that anyone in the game will find hard to beat."
Giggs added: "When I signed my first contract, I never thought I’d be able to play at United for 22 years, but I feel good and I know I can still contribute to keeping the team pushing for honours.
"Winning the club’s 19th title was a great feeling but this club is all about what we do next and I’m really pleased I can be part of that."
Meanwhile, Ferguson has played down concerns over the first meeting between Patrice Evra and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez since the Uruguayan's racism ban.
Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Saturday with Suarez expected to feature after completing the eight-match penalty he incurred after he was found to have racially abused Evra.
The Anfield side, with manager Kenny Dalglish at the forefront, have persistently defended Suarez's actions but Ferguson shrugged off concerns over lingering bad feeling.
Asked about the usual pre-match handshake between players, he said: "I have not even thought about that. It has never been an issue. We are concentrating on the game."
Although Dalglish has had no hesitation in speaking out in defence of Suarez, insisting after his side had dropped points in a 0-0 draw at home to Tottenham on Monday that the Uruguayan should not have been punished, Ferguson declined to comment on Suarez's behaviour.
He added: "We have kept our counsel, which was the right thing to do. We will keep it that way."

Giggs A Legend
and what part of manchester are you from geoff croydon or japan you deluded fool. Watch out and hide Manchester City are about to put your average hasbeen club back where it belongs the SH ITHOLE of Manchester !!!
Why has nobody said 'Well done Giggsy'? Giggs has provided pleasure and entertainment to fans for years and the most successful Premier |League player ever. Would they have vilified Stanley Matthews or Tom Finney, or players like that who had very long careers? I don't think so. so leave Giggs alone and let him get on with it.
Anthony: Manchester is Red, always haas been always will be. Your little clubs own research showed that United have more Manchester based season ticket holders than city, which is why it was never published and had to be leaked to United We Stand fanzine. I grew up in Hightown, Cheetham Hill, Manchester and its was solid Red apart from my cousin who we don't talk about. Even in the sixties, when you last won the League there was far more support in Manchester for United and it is stioll the same today. Just because the shamful blue supporting Manchester City Council rent you a home in North Manchester does not make you a Manchester Club, You were founded in Lancashire and ou will always be "The Incomers". When I was at School in Gorton United was the N01 club and areas like Beswick, Bradford, Openshaw, Ancoats, Harpurhey and Newton Heath were solid Red, so you are trespassing on Red ground. "The Incomers" had support in Clayton)now in Tameside), Moss Side,Burnage, Levenshulme and West Gorton. Wythenshawe was also a blue stronghold. So learn something of the City of Manchester''s History before you start spouting bitter blue rubbish!
Mr Angry, why are you one a Red page you bitter blue bustard.
The mythology that Giggs and Scholes were somehow "stolen" from little city is absolute nonsense. Giggs had trials with city but never signed for them. Scholes had trails with city, Oldham and BUry but also never signed for any of them. United could not steal what was not yours you silly blue twerps. city fans as still harping on about Ryan Giggs private life because they are insanely jealous that the most successful footballer in English and Welsh football plays for the only professional Footbal Club ever founded in Manchester: Manchester United FC. Come on Ryan Giggs, continue to annoy these silly Stockport and Whitefield idiots for another couple of seasons.
We will know the truth about Scumchester at 2.30pm today...lolsers.
And scummers prepare for a skyblue domination of the premier league for years to come. THE ONLY REAL FOOTBALL FANS IN MANCHESTER SUPPORT CITY !!!!!!!!!!! ALL YOU SOUTHERN PRAWN SANDWICH EATING HYPOCRITICAL SH ITHOUSES WILL HAVE TO GO BACK TO SUPPORTING YOUR HOMETOWN CLUBS LIKE CHELSEA, ARSENAL AND GRAMPUS 8
Giggsy's playing at 'home' today for once...
United are skint....FACT.....Imogen the reaction from 'fans' when they rename OldsTwatford the 'Saga' or 'Stannah stair lft' stadium...slippery slope beckons...lol.
Giggs @#$% around too much. It;s time for him to go. Man U needs a younger leader in the mid field.
Never felt sorry for Rhodri!
Swearez for a 2 nil win to Pool...
hey gareth, theres none so blind as them that cant see - save your breath fella .
amazing quote of the day!
"only utd produce players like scholes and giggs!" wow, the blinkered nature of your gesture! barca have produced Inesta, messi, busquets, poyoul, fabregas, xavi and on and on! a covayour belt of tallent! utd produced (22 years ago to 18 years ago) butt, nevelle(s) giggs, scholes and beckham! since then who have they produced???? real top tallent like o'shea, brown, evans and gibson! 3 of those players were sold when utd realized that barca had better players than that in their youth team!!! porto, ajax, benfica, most of the brazilian top 4 sides all produce better tallent! so give your head the day off mate :-)
229 jonnyk- eeeeeerm tell us some more then.
Im sure all you utd fans are 20 yrs old and younger! let me remind you in these very unsucessful 22 years liverpool have had we have won the league! 89-90 which is 22 years ago! it is in those 22 years you speak of! i have a little list of things we won when we were so unsucessful which goes:-
1 League title
3 FA cups
2 League Cups (soon to be 3)
1 Champions league trophy
1 Uefa Cup (good luck in that competition by the way ;-)
2 super cups
3 Charity shields
ok, it's not what fergie has done in those 22 years but im sure spurs, city, arsenal and chelsea would have all taken this record over their own??? so all you little fergies who wander through life saying stuff like "look at the time" "chew chew chew" "where do they get these ref's and linesmen from" just remember that football ebs and flows! liverpool were the club to beat for 20 years, utd were the team to beat for 20 years! see where im going with this? City? title? difference is today Utd need to win! liverpool don't! ha ha ha...........
This page stinks of scousers!
i can smell jealousy all over the world from my desk here.....only man united ever produce players like scholes and giggs
Nob Eddy: Go back to bed...the only signing at Olds Twatford this week by pish Ed Ferguscum for Moanchester is an ageing Welsh inbreed...looking forward to us skinnin him down the wing...lol.
