Dons defeat Spireites to go back top

Mon 10 Mar, 10:45 PM

MK Dons returned to the top of League Two with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over fellow promotion contenders Chesterfield at Saltergate. The win nudges Paul Ince's side above Peterborough and improves an already remarkable away record that has now seen them pick up 14 wins from 19 attempts.

At the hub of much of Dons' best work was their inspirational captain Keith Andrews, who on his return from suspension, scored the game's first goal and later set up the winner for Lloyd Dyer.

An evenly fought first period was punctuated with a goal three minutes before the break when Andrews stole in at the far post to convert a right wing delivery from close range.

Chesterfield restored parity in the 69th minute when Jamie Lowry's drive from the edge of the box beat Willy Gueret after taking a slight deflection off Andrews.

But the hosts' joy proved shortlived though, for less than a minute later, they were behind as Dyer netted a classy winner.

Andrews' clever slide-rule pass played in the in-form forward and after exchanging passes with substitute Aaron Wilbraham, he curled in a sumptuous winner.
