Bristol Rovers coach Paul Trollope has warned his players not let the FA Cup defeat to West Brom harm their League One campaign. In the sixth round of the cup for the first time in 50 years and for only the second time in their history, Rovers were outclassed by their Championship opponents as they lost 5-1 at the Memorial Stadium.
Trollope's side are 17th in League One but have as many as four games in hand over their rivals, and winning them all would put the Pirates firmly in play-off contention.
One of the big turning points last season was the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat to Doncaster at the Millennium Stadium in April.
Rovers went unbeaten for the remaining 10 games of the campaign, culminating in promotion after a Wembley play-off win.
Trollope hopes the defeat to West Brom can spur his team on in a similar way.
"Results like this can work both ways and one thing we do not want to let happen is for the season to fizzle out," said Trollope.
"We need to pat ourselves on the back for reaching the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, and then look at what can still be achieved in the league if we put our minds to it.
"We have got two big games coming up this week. We have dropped down to 17th in the league and that is not where we want to be, even though we are only in that position due to the number of games that we have missed because of the cup run.
"When we come back to work on Tuesday we need to make sure we are ready for the remainder of the season because we have got a lot of games in hand and there are plenty of points to play for.
"Our league form has been decent and we have not lost many of late. We have got a good confidence about us and we can't let this result worry us."
