Button impresses for Brawn in Spain

Eurosport - Tue, 10 Mar 11:10:00 2009

The new Brawn GP team enjoyed a solid first day of running after Jenson Button posted the fourth quickest time on the opening day of the four-day Formula One group test in Barcelona.

Brawn GP's driver Jenson Button takes a curve on his car during a testing session at Catalunya's racetrack in Montmelo, near Barcelona - 0

Following a brief shakedown of the new Mercedes-powered BGP001 at Silverstone last week, the test marked the first chance for the team to put any meaningful mileage on the car - with only seven days of testing available before the 2009 season kicks off in Melbourne at the end of the month.

With the team looking to strike a balance between improving the reliability and the performance of the car, Button worked through a programme that included set-up of the new machine while the Briton also carried out tyre evaluation work with the Bridgestone slick rubber.

Button will hand the BGP001 over to Rubens Barrichello on Tuesday to give the Brazilian his first taste of the car, with the pair set to share on-track running over the course of the week.

"It has been a good first day in the BGP001 with our new team, Brawn GP," Button said after completing more than 80 laps of the Spanish circuit. "I'd like to start by thanking everyone at the team for all the hard work that has contributed to getting us here today. We have enjoyed a positive opening day of running at our first test and achieved a total of 82 laps, which we are all very pleased with.

"We did experience a problem with the gearbox late in the day but we knew we might face some reliability issues in view of our lack of testing. Fortunately, it's a minor problem that is easily addressed. It's early days yet but generally it has been a positive start to our pre-season preparations."

  8. ournige, the best suggestion I've heard so far, although it won't be recognised much outside the UK is BRAINS bitter (beer), it's a welsh brewery. Can''t take credit for it, someone else thought it up.

  9. forza ferrari. what worries me is the financial impetus that's required from day one of the season. where does Brawn GP stand? is it more financially buoyant than say Super Aguri was? Brawn rocks of that there's no doubt but it takes more than one man to float an entire team both financialy, logisticaly and strategicaly. what i'm saying is is that it appeared to me that last season he appeared to play a part in every role in Honda. it's a mighty step surely for someone even of Brawns stature

  10. Brawn/Braun the razor company would be a great match. "Shave Jensons Stubble" contests to raise funds...just thinking out loud, sorry.

  11. Further to my post below (337), there is some speculation that bwin may be in the running as a sponsor. The black and yellow colours on the Brawn are fanning the speculative flames. It's worth noting though that the yellows used on the brands are very different. So, either there is no connection or it's a deliberate move to avoid an obvious connection... but I don't buy that one. Or.. the rumour could have some truth to it and the 'similar' colour scheme may be just a coincidence. Lost the will to live yet?

  13. Hi Bill, no idea. 316 (john) has suggested Virgin. Could be a possibility. Also, a Mercedes or Emirates connection springs to mind but I don't know anything about that area so it's pure, ignorant speculation (before anyone confirms that for me – the ignorant bit I mean!).

I did comment earlier (monday pm) that I thought Brawn may be less suitable for world consumer brands at the moment than perhaps a more 'technical business' type sponsor. The only reason I say that is that the Ross Brawn reputation lends itself to a valuable partnership in that direction. We may see a comparatively low key, hi-tech niche brand get involved. Who knows, I'm probably way off and it will turn out to be McDonald's.

  14. Thats the downfall of the impersonators. You can copy a name and a picture, you can't however copy a person's intelligence and writing style. This is why they are so easily spotted, and why everyone knew I was ginger_gitt without me having to tell them.

I don't know if you noticed Forza, but apparently there are people who diagree with me that it'll be a good thing when the season starts and we can have some real F1 news to discuss. And no one out there will admit to being on here just to cause trouble. Isn't that strange?

  19. Don't give up guys. Hopefully, when the real races begin, there will be enough true Formula One fans here to shut them all up. Until then, we are made to suffer.
Back to this article, I think that the test times this week will be more meaningful than those of the other tests. It's really good to see Brawn GP getting off to a great start.
