Champions League - Choose 'em or lose 'em?

Eurosport - Tue, 10 Mar 09:11:00 2009

With 16 clubs ready to fight it out for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals this week, it's time to go to the Fantasy Europe Cup transfer market.

FORWARDS

Choose 'em: Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan (17m) scored in the first leg against Porto and followed that with another one in his side's 1-1 La Liga draw with Real Madrid at the weekend. Atletico and Porto shared four goals in Spain and who'd bet against another high-scoring encounter in the return? Arsenal's Eduardo (8m) is cheap as chips and improving by the game since his return from a broken leg. Another good option is Luca Toni (20m), who bagged a brace in Bayern Munich's 5-0 demolition of Sporting Lisbon. Finally, how about spending some big money on Wayne Rooney (30m) of Manchester United? The England striker is clearly a man in form and will relish the big-match atmosphere of Internazionale's visit to Old Trafford.

Lose 'em: Francesco Totti (17m) may be Roma's captain and talisman, but the mercurial forward missed his side's clash with Udinese through injury and may not start against Arsenal. You might also want to avoid Zlatan Ibrahimovic (35m), who may have scored for his club at the weekend but is up against a Manchester United defence who specialise in clean sheets.

MIDFIELDERS

Choose 'em: Bayern Munich's Franck Ribery (25m) was irresistible in the home leg against Sporting, so who better to lead your midfield than the French international. Juninho (15m) is another good option, especially in light of his fine display and wonderful free-kick goal in the first-leg draw with Barcelona.

Lose 'em: Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun (6.5m) is expected to miss the visit of Real Madrid through injury, so is best avoided. Another to be wary of is Chelsea's Deco (15m), who is also struggling to be fit for action.

DEFENDERS

Choose 'em: Panathinaikos have only scored once in their last three Champions League outings, so it might be worth giving Villarreal's Joan Capdevila (11m) a start to capitalise. Carles Puyol (16m) of Barcelona also looks a good option when you consider that Lyon travel to Camp Nou having never beaten the Spanish champions in the Champions League.

Lose 'em: After their first-leg mauling it would surely be ill-advised to select Miguel Veloso (6m) or any of his Sporting team-mates for the return against Bayern. Chelsea have never progressed in the Champions League knock-out stages after winning the first leg, so the stats would suggest John Terry (28m) represents a risk.

GOALKEEPER

Choose 'em: Edwin van der Sar (6m) has kept more than his fair share of clean sheets this season and the Manchester United shot-stopper will fancy himself for another one at home to Inter. Liverpool's Jose Reina (12m) is more expensive, but when you consider the Reds are unbeaten in seven Champions League matches and have only considered five times, the Spanish keeper looks a decent bet.

Lose 'em: Manchester United are unbeaten in 20 Champions League matches and scoring freely in domestic competition. Inter's Julio Cesar (12m) could be in for a busy evening.
