Champions League - Ferdinand fit to face Inter

Eurosport - Tue, 10 Mar 19:01:00 2009

Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea will both start Manchester United's last-16 Champions League decider with Internazionale after training on Tuesday morning.

Rio Ferdinand - 0

Ferdinand appeared to be a major doubt for the game, which is goalless after the first leg in the San Siro a fortnight ago, after he limped out of Saturday's win at Fulham with an ankle injury.

However, the injury has responded well to treatment and Ferdinand was able to take part in training.

Providing he suffers no reaction, the 30-year-old is expected to line up alongside defensive partner Nemanja Vidic as the Red Devils look for the win that will take them into the quarter-finals.

O'Shea has recovered from a minor thigh strain that saw him also taken off during the Fulham game, and he will continue in the right-back role.

Long-term casualties Gary Neville and Wes Brown and Rafael da Silva are all absent.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Ferdinand and O'Shea trained today for the first time. Both are fit and both will play."

The holders are favourites to go through, although Ferguson must end a disappointing sequence of results against Inter boss Jose Mourinho, having won just once in 13 encounters with the former Chelsea and Porto manager.

Inter have defensive problems of their own, with Cristian Chivu, Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso all definitely out of the tie.

Chivu has a thigh strain, while the other two were both injured during Saturday's 2-0 Serie A win at Genoa.

Italian World Cup winner Materazzi appeared to pull a muscle as he reached for the ball in the centre circle during the first half.

And he was soon joined in the treatment room by Burdisso, with midfielder Esteban Cambiasso forced to fill in at the back.

"For Nicolas Burdisso, tests showed a tear in the right leg and a tear in the medial ligament of the left knee," the club stated, adding that Materazzi had a left leg injury.

Fellow centre-back Walter Samuel has returned to full training and will play.
