Southampton boss Nigel Pearson feels Barnsley's surprise win at Watford will serve as a timely wake-up call for his side. The Tykes climbed out of the relegation places - and above Saints - when they stunned promotion-chasing Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road on Wednesday night.
Saints are now just two points above the danger zone ahead of Saturday's tough trip to Charlton, having themselves moved out of the bottom three with a shock 2-0 win over high-flying Bristol City last week.
"I have said all along there will be mood swings as other results go for or against us and that was another instance," said Pearson.
"It shows again that we cannot rely on other teams slipping up - we have to look after our own fortunes.
"The good thing is that our fate is in our own hands and if we do it right then we will be okay. It's good to be out of the bottom three but we cannot afford to be complacent - it can all change around very quickly."
