AMELIA ISLAND, Florida (AFP) - Lindsay Davenport continued her string of success by rolling over unseeded American compatriot Jill Craybas 6-1, 6-4 at the WTA Bausch and Lomb Championships on Wednesday.
In the biggest upset so far, No. 3 Daniela Hantuchova - a two-time quarter-finalist here - was sent crashing out of the tournament after suffering a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 loss to Croatian qualifier Karolina Sprem.
In knocking off Hantuchova, Sprem recorded nine aces and overpowered the talented Slovakian.
As for Davenport, she was successful on 24 of 27 first-serve points to win the match in 58 minutes and improve to 44-6 since returning to the WTA Tour last September.
The 31-year-old also has claimed four titles after sitting out 11 months to have her first child. That success has pushed her from 234th in the world to her current ranking of 30th.
The former No. 1 also is no stranger to success at this clay court event, having won here in 1997, 2004 and 2005.
Davenport improved to 32-5 over 10 appearances here after defeating Craybas, a 33-year-old veteran who was facing her compatriot for the first time.
The only other former champion here is 11th-seeded Amelie Mauresmo, who advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over 18-year-old Sorana Cirstea of Romania.
Mauresmo, 28, was the 2001 champion and also was a runner-up to Davenport in 2004.
Though she hinted at retirement earlier this year, Mauresmo still appears determined to play her way back into the top 20. However, the 24th-ranked Frenchwoman has struggled to a 13-7 mark this season and is 0-4 against top 30 players.
Russian Elena Vesnina upset fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, in a match that lasted one hour, 38 minutes.
Alize Cornet benefited from a powerful serve to defeat ninth-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer, 6-1, 6-3. The Frenchwoman was successful on 26 of 31 first-serve points to win the match in 75 minutes.
No. 2 Anna Chakvetadze made her Amelia Island debut with a routine 6-3, 6-1 win over Japanese qualifier Ayumi Morita.
The 21-year-old Russian is seeking her second title of the year after claiming her seventh career championship at the Paris indoors event in February. She is just 4-4 since that victory.
