Lindsay Davenport made short work of fellow American Jill Craybas with a 6-1 6-4 victory to reach the Amelia Island Championships third round.
Former world number one Davenport was one of seven seeds to advance but four went out, including number three Daniela Hantuchova, fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder and Austrian Sybille Bammer .
Davenport needed just 55 minutes to dispose of Craybas, dominating with her serve on which she won 24 of 27 points.
"It was a fine match for me to play. I felt like in the second I went through a period there where I made some errors where I didn't really need to make them," Davenport said.
"Overall, I felt I actually hit the ball better than I did yesterday and did a few things better and now it's just about trying to get more consistent."
It took Davenport, seeded 16th after returning to the tour last year following a break to have a baby, just 19 minutes to capture the first set as she used her powerful forehand to good effect.
Craybas was more competitive in the second set, trailing 5-2 when she held service and broke Davenport in winning eight out of nine points.
But Davenport recovered from the lapse and closed out the match when Craybas sent a backhand into the net.
Slovakian Hantuchova lost 6-3 1-6 6-3 to Karolina Sprem of Croatia, Swiss Schnyder went down 6-2 2-6 6-2 to Russian Elena Vesnina and ninth seed Bammer was beaten by Alize Cornet of France 6-1 6-3.
Second seed Anna Chakvetadze beat Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-3 6-1 and former world number one Amelie Mauresmo, seeded 11th, overcame Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7-5 6-1 to advance to the third round.
The Russian needed just 64 minutes to claim the victory, breaking serve seven times in a row after Morita held her opening service game.
However, the world number seven dropped her own serve on three occasions and was critical of her opening performance.
"I really didn't play that consistently or as well as I wanted to play," Chakvetadze said.
"But for a first match of this tournament and first match on green clay, it was OK. I could do worse. I just want to play more consistently, especially with my serve tomorrow."
Chakvetadze, who reached the US Open semi-finals last year, served nine double faults and lost almost half of her service games.
"I have to control myself more and hopefully I can do that tomorrow," she said looking towards her third-round match against Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova.
The 20-year-old Chakvetadze had an inconsistent season on clay last year, prompting her to skip the hard courts at Indian Wells last month to add the clay court events at Amelia Island and Charleston to her schedule.
"I wanted to prepare myself better for the red clay season. Last year my best result was the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and before that I really didn't play that well," she said.
"I can't say that clay is my favourite surface, but green clay is much faster than red. I do like green clay more than red clay but you have to get used to it.
"This is a good preparation and a good start to the clay court season."
