Roger Federer has reversed his initial decision to skip the Monte Carlo Masters and will now take part in the opening clay-court tournament of the season.
The world number two from Switzerland had originally planned to play less in clay-court competition in 2009 than in past years, and he has only signed up for Rome and Madrid as preparation for the French Open.
Organisers of the April 11-19 Monte Carlo Masters had kept Federer a wildcard in the hope he changed his mind.
"We never lost hope that he would play," admitted tournament director Zejlko Franulovic.
Federer has endured a disappointing start to the season in his own high standards, failing to win a tournament and losing more ground on arch-rival and world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain.
Federer has never won in Monte Carlo, and has lost the final of the last three tournaments to the Spaniard.

Look guys Tennis is worth watching around the world especially Africa because of one man - Ro genius Federer Without him money reeling television audience will ebb. Tournament organizers know this. Ask Monte Carlo 2009 organizers if you are in doubt. He is the Face of Tennis. Ro genius is the ONLY ambassador of Tennis- the best there was and the very best there ever will be on court.
eric
Nadal wins because he is very quick around the court and even more importantly, he will chase anything, nothing is a lost cause. Couple this with the fact he hardly ever makes an unforced error and you have a formiddable player.
If anyones going to stop him at Monte Carlo or Roland Garros, they'll have to play out of their skin. On clay he is more difficult to beat because he is so fast anyway, he has even more time to chase down. If Roger is going to beat him, the unforced errors have to go, Rafa sometimes makes less than ten a match.
Come on Roger.
It´s time to turn it arround again. I believe Roger will step up a gear and show he still got it. He will meet Nadal in the final and then it´s just to see whats happens because lets face it Nadal is king of clay but Roger is the second best on clay by far and he has showed that for many years.
Venus is the best player in the world. Why does people not like the williams' sisters. They should be appreciated. They alone are the tennis players that are keeping the WTA WATCHABLE. Sorry if you want to watch junior quality tennis. SUPPORT VENUS. I think at the monet she is the only one worthy of a Grand slam at Rolland Garros she has work consistently hard. SHE SHOULD AND WILL WIN ROLLAND GARROS
A BRAND NEW ROLAND GARROS BY 2012!FRENCH FEDERATION TENNIS PRESIDENT Jean Gachassin announced tha a new CENTRE COURT WITH A RETRACTABLE ROOF WILL BE BUILT to make sure that the French Open does not move to Madrid in the near future. The whole Roland Garros will be enlarged(with new courts among others). There 4 architects to choose from.Building licence to be obtained before end of 2009.Construction should be starting beginning of 2010 and ending in 2012.
another loss for Federer against Nadal...
I think Federer now realises that he cant let the young pretenders creep up on him. He now HAS to play as many tournaments as them just to stay where he is. Its a clear sign that he isnt as dominant as he once was.
It's hard for Roger to destroy his racket on clay.I can't wait to see......
Come on Roger you can do it.Some of the posts on this site are stupid and not about tennis get RID eurosport please.
Lets all wish Federer good luck.. he needs a lot of luck now to win ANY tournament!
Young guns are firing their weapon without any response from him! Now that next tourment is on clay...hmmmmmm..maybe more trouble for him and lost his control again!
Great decision! I was already criticizing him for omitting this masters. Now I see he has clear mind to get as much practise against top players as he can. Looking forward to see him on clay. He is one of the best claycourters on the planet.
ROGER GET A COACH! ROGER GET A COACH! ROGER GET A COACH! ROGER GET A COACH!
LET'S GO ROGER!
Why is this saying invalid comment
