Zander de Bruyn fell two runs short of becoming his side's third second-innings centurion as Somerset set Hampshire a huge target in the LV County Championship.
De Bruyn, 75 not out overnight, shared in a sixth-wicket partnership of 111 with Peter Trego (84no) before Somerset declared on 654 for six in their second innings at Taunton.
That left the visitors needing an unlikely 422 to win a First Division game they had been well in control of after claiming a first-innings lead of 233. They were 31 without loss at lunch on the final day.
Kent's eighth-wicket pair of Ryan McLaren and Yasir Arafat looked to be inching their side towards victory over leaders Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
The visitors were wobbling in their pursuit of 244 after being reduced to 173 for seven but McLaren (32no) and Arafat (29no) took their team within 12 runs.
In the Second Division, Middlesex needed two more wickets to finish off Essex at Chelmsford.
Danny Evans claimed the crucial wicket of Varun Chopra for 38 as Essex, chasing 299, slipped from their overnight 123 for five to 220 for eight.
Derbyshire declared on 417 for six to set Warwickshire a target of 378 at the County Ground.
Dane Freddie Klokker, a wicketkeeper playing as a specialist batsman, finished unbeaten on 103 from 278 balls.
Warwickshire, who perhaps more realistically had to bat out the remainder of the day, were 19 for one.
