A stroke off the pace overnight, Goydos picked up his fourth birdie of the day to edge ahead of a tightly bunched leaderboard at the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass.

Bidding for his third PGA Tour title, the 43-year-old was at seven under overall, with compatriot Kenny Perry and Spaniard Sergio Garcia tied for second place.

Perry, the overnight pacesetter, had completed nine holes and Garcia 10.

Veteran German Bernhard Langer, after nine, and emerging American talent Anthony Kim, after 10, were a further stroke behind at five under in a share of fourth.

Langer made a fast start in relatively calm conditions, hitting his approach to four feet at the first for a tap-in birdie and narrowly missing a nine-footer for eagle at the par-five second.

That left the 50-year-old German in a tie for the lead with the 47-year-old Perry, who also birdied the second.

However, Langer slid backwards with bogeys at the fourth, sixth and eighth before ramming in a 24-footer to birdie the ninth and get back to five under.

Perry, like Langer, bogeyed the fourth to reach the turn in level-par 36.

Garcia, who had opened with a sparkling 66 on Thursday, claimed a brief share of the lead with a 14-foot birdie putt at the ninth to complete a front nine of one-under 35.

His playing partner Goydos bogeyed that hole after hitting his third shot into the back left bunker but pulled ahead of the field with his birdie on the 10th green.

American Greg Kraft fired the lowest round among the early starters, a seven-birdie 68 lifting him into a tie for 10th at one-under 215.
