Champions League - Hiddink calls for video refs

Eurosport - Sun, 10 May 13:42:00 2009

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has urged football's authorities to come to the aid of referees by introducing video technology for key decisions.

FOOTBALL Hiddink like a helicopter - 0

Hiddink has struggled to accept the Blues' Champions League exit in the wake of Wednesday night's controversial 1-1 semi-final draw with Barcelona when Norwegian official Tom Henning Ovrebo turned down several strong appeals for Chelsea penalties.

Hiddink believes the time has come to hand critical decisions to a video referee, insisting; "In other sports like rugby and American football they have the ability to use technology at vital moments. Everyone waits five seconds for the video referee before making a decision."

He added: "It can be done only on key moments that make a difference to the outcome of the game otherwise it would stop the game too much.

"The video referee must have authority to overrule the first man in charge.

"In rugby and American football when the video decision is made, that's the decision.

"It's a fact that if technology had been in use we would be in the Champions League final now.

"It would help a lot what is a difficult job for the referee when they have to make crucial decisions. It's up to UEFA whether they act."

  1. Its best decision. Football has grown to more than a game. Its our life now. The final will be carefully officiate dbecause of the noise now. To compensate, man U will win. UEFA will fine Chelsea and ban Drogba for the group stages. Dats all after dat nothing will change. Platine should be booted out of UEFA. He has not developed UEFA.

  2. The whole world witnessed the Chelsea fiasco and UEFA are clearly the loosers as the quality of cheating or game fixing was there for all to see. I am not a Chelsea fan but watch sport for enjoyment however seeing a team stitched up in the way Chelsea were makes me question the value of football as a sport. JOIN ME AND START WTCHING RUGBY at least you will not be paying for tickets to games where the result has already been predetermined. I dont think Barcelona needed to waste the airfare travelling to win that one UEFA could have simply given the game to them without the mismatch being played.

  3. If UEFA fail to introduce video then some official will be certainly killed for his mistake and UEFA will not be able to extract themselves from having blood on their hands. Please introduce technology before someone pays the ultimate price after which you will be forced to introduce it.

Passion was high with the ridiculous ref performance at Chelsea and I fear reprisal if Chelsea or their players are punished. UEFA should let this one go on the bases that the punishment was a wholly unfair exit from the competition. If club or players are punished then so fshould the referee be as he clearly brought the game into disripute. Oh for the record I am not a Chelsea fan but simply a fan of football. Football lost on that fateful night of incompetence, hate or love Chelsea every club is entitled to play by the rules and any fan whos team had suffered such an awful result would feel as passionate as the Chelsea bunch. COME ON UEFA WAKE UP BEFORE SOMEONE DIES FOR WHAT SHOULD BE A GAME

  4. Video aid is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY - now!

  5. Thank you UEFA for the stupid ref.u must consider video ref now.

  6. Football surpose to be won by merit not by UEFA instructing the ref the team they want to win, they (UEFA) stoped the ref from making a comment or apologising to the whole world uptill now for what he did.The football governing body will not allow vidio ref becaouse they will not have the chance of their corupt and political actions

  7. We have this in tennis... the player is allowed to make 3 wrong appeals per set, and the replay is shown to the entire stadium.

However, in football, it should be only the captain of the team, or the trainer who calls the appeals, and there should only be 2, because 3 would be too many per half.

Of course, the ref would still decide... but, it would be more fair: imagine Tottenham - Man Utd with this, or Chelsea-Barça

  8. I quite agree with the coach. I remember very well that Wenger made similar demand from UEFA in the past and this has pitched him against Platini. I think there is a case of insincerity in UEFA. For those anti-Chelsea guys who see nothing good in the coach's suggestion, well, their fear was that they were well aware of the fact that under Chelsea's current coach, it would have been a bad day for Man United if they were to meet the Blues in CL's final. They are therefore happy that they avoided Chelsea in the final. They are all hypocrites, with a lot of referees decisions favouring Man U even when it was clear that the decisions were wrong i.e penalty againt Bolton when Ronaldo dived but no noise or complain. 9. WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE? THE INSTANT REPLAYS ARE SHOWN(OH! MANY TIMES, SO MANY ANGLES!) TO THE VIEWERS BUT CANNOT BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE REFEREES? PROTESTS OR APPEALS CAN BE LIMITED TO 2 PER TEAM PER GAME AND THAT WOULD BE IT. THE TECHNOLOGY IS ALREADY THERE. THEY USED IT IN THE LAST WORLD CUP, REMEMBER THE "HEAD BUTTING" THAT THE OFFICIATING REFEREE DID NOT NOTICE BUT WAS "REPORTED" BY ANOTHER "REFEREE" LIKELY SITTING IN FRONT OF AN LCD SCREEN?

  10. That's right coach, but u could have asked uefa to sack that ref.

  11. This to me seems a very good idea and has been suggested a long time ago and was never acted on. Being a chelsea supporter i agree we should be in the final. But the decision for a ref to go to video replay would ultimately rely on the ref, so we could all still be arguing the @#$% over a decision! especially if the ref decide's not to go to a video replay which leave's you back at square one! and as for Drogba, he IS a disgrace! video replay's if brought in could put a stop to this so it works both way's, but again, only if the ref makes the decision to take it to a video replay in the first place! slowly but surely the game is being ruined, it's no longer a game played with love and passion, but a window to exercise one's self importance and greed. very sad!

  13. FIFA could also adopt tennis' eye hawk. each team could, for example, challenge the decision 3-4 times in the whole matches.

  14. Hiya Everybody !!!

Guus Hiddink's suggestions seems to be a very good idea to me.

But most of my friends who are way smarter than me (cos I'm a real dumb blonde, of which I am extremely proud of) tells me that it is unlikely UEFA would ever want to consider the use of video technology "bcos they then can't plant inexperienced referees into matches like Chelsea vs Barcelona and get away with it".

Anyway, I still don't understand what my friends were talking about. I had always hoped to have a smarter brain, guess it's just my good luck to be a dumb blonde :)

  16. The referees should clamp down on the divers and stop the play acting. Its seems to be more important in the game now to con the refs rather than to score a fair goal. Drogba is too easy to knock down for a big man and has a reputation for this. Lets get back to good hard football and rid the game of the cheats. By the way I am not a fan of either team, but I am a fan of football.

  17. I think what happened at Stamford Bridge is what you see in local League in some places like Africa and Asia, I have never believed it will happen champions league, there is no fair play and is bad, this why the killed a referee in one village. UEFA is rubbish if they cannot organise the game for people to enjoy it, I my ticket to watch a game not an arranged game if not I rather stay at home a play a video game, they should UEFA president if he cannot control the game, they should remember that the whole world watched the game and have a thought if this is an a good example for those who are leaning from, them places like Africa and Asia

From mathew A, on Sun 10 May 11:21AM
  18. i agree with boss guus hiddink proposal to use video decisions technology. But the league should only limit 2 appeals in each game so that the game will not be delayed and they will only use it in critical moments. perhaps they can decide it in a few seconds just like appealing in basketball to the referees.I always watch soccer, and sometimes there are many wrong decision by the referees and there were many diving queens. if they use technology, perhaps all of these will be lessened.

  19. It is better to just acknowledge you were beaten by a better team than yours, a team that played better football than your strategy of defence. Video or no video, managers like you have to accept defeat and accept that your defence policy against the best team in Europe did not work.
The referee did not get anything wrong, because you spend time crying over things that don't matter. 11 against 10 and you still went for defending against Barca. Video is not important and if you still have indigestion from that defeat, please you and your players (especially the "stars" of the "show") better seek medical advice.

  20. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

Hiddink is a hypocrite, do you not remember the world of Korea? He said that Spain was the fail and not the referees . In away match with Barcelona he told the same . The sad thing is that 4 dubious penalty calls but does not speak about the foul play of his team and the few cards they received. If Chelsea lost was by great player Iniesta and because with 11 players they didn´t try find the 2-0. ¿ Referees? Where is the yellow cards and red cards for Chelsea? Where were ??! xD Excuses
