Coyle: Still lots to play for

Sun 10 May, 11:43 AM

Owen Coyle believes Burnley must still improve if they are to progress to the Championship play-off final at Wembley on May 25.

Graham Alexander sent Turf Moor wild with a 84th-minute winner from the penalty spot to hand the Clarets a precious 1-0 advantage in the first leg of their semi-final against Reading.

But Coyle said: ``There's still a lot to play for, there's no doubt about that. The game wasn't really what I had anticipated in terms of two good football teams getting the ball down and playing."

He added: ``I thought Reading came with a gameplan to stifle our threat and all credit to them. They were relatively successful in doing it, but Brian has also made an outstanding save and Martin Paterson has kicked one off the line.

``I can't ask any more of the players - the courage, the desire and the hunger they have to win football games is so evident.

``We know we have to play better than that and that's what we'll look to do.''

  1. To phil.hayward1....No Burnley fan or the team think it`s all over by any stretch of the imagination.
Granted, Reading were the better team in a game that never really got going.
But think about this...We played poorly and still won and i doubt that we`ll play that poorly in the 2nd leg at your place. So it`s game on!!

  2. Readings home form of late is poor and Burnley will probably not play as badly as yesterday in the second leg when we were lucky to win. The only worry is the fitness of the players ( shaking off injuries etc.) Owen Coyle has up to now squeezed out the last breath of his players what a great manager he is and also a very nice man. Good luck and keep the dream of a Wembley appearance in focus.

  4. Owen C, we need to be a lot, lot, lot better my mate, your right not to criticise the team which has given their whole, across the season...........BUT.............We need a Tottenham like performance on Tuesday, to be fair, we were garbage yesterday and Reading should have had the game, sort it out quickly....

One final push and it's Wembley.....Come on Burnley....
