Hiddink calls for video technology

Sun, 10 May 11:41:22 2009

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has urged football's authorities to come to the aid of referees by introducing video technology for key decisions.

Hiddink has struggled to accept the Blues' Champions League exit in the wake of Wednesday night's controversial 1-1 semi-final draw with Barcelona when Norwegian official Tom Henning Ovrebo turned down several strong appeals for Chelsea penalties.

Hiddink believes the time has come to hand critical decisions to a video referee, insisting; "In other sports like rugby and American football they have the ability to use technology at vital moments. Everyone waits five seconds for the video referee before making a decision."

He added: "It can be done only on key moments that make a difference to the outcome of the game otherwise it would stop the game too much.

"The video referee must have authority to overrule the first man in charge.

"In rugby and American football when the video decision is made, that's the decision.

"It's a fact that if technology had been in use we would be in the Champions League final now.

"It would help a lot what is a difficult job for the referee when they have to make crucial decisions. It's up to UEFA whether they act."

  2. Comment 3, people like you are just out of tune with reality. Injustice to someone is injustice to all. It is not only about last wednesday. Look at the situation where a referee is giving a goal when the ball does not even enter the post, not to talk of crossing the line. How do you feel in such a situation.? Video evidence is for the benefit of all.

  3. I hope this black day in football history will finally force the UEFA hypocrites to accept they have to turn this dodgy scheme into a fair sport by introducing video technology for key decisions. After that disgraceful night full of wrongful, decisive rulings, the time has come for drastic changes. There are no more legitimate excuses trying to avoid the inevitable...

  5. I think what happened at Stamford Bridge is what you see in local League in some places like Africa and Asia, I have never believed it will happen champions league, there is no fair play and is bad, this why the killed a referee in one village. UEFA is rubbish if they cannot organise the game for people to enjoy it, I my ticket to watch a game not an arranged game if not I rather stay at home a play a video game, they should UEFA president if he cannot control the game, they should remember that the whole world watched the game and have a thought if this is an a good example for those who are leaning from, them places like Africa and Asia

  6. I believe we sould use technology to check if a ball crosses the goal line, but otherwise it is probably not practicle. I am a Chelsea fan and I was actually at the game last Wednesday. I was also more than upset over the ref's ineptitude and wrong decisions, but I didn't go on ranting about it afterwards. I was both appalled at the ref's performance and ashamed for some of my teams reactions after the game. The ref was wrong 4 times, but as said before - over a period of time all the good and bad decisions even themselves out. So come on Blues, we lost that one, but lets just get over it. I hope that Barca and Man U give us a great game to enjoy in the final. In the meantime we still have the runners up spot in the league to chase and the FA Cup final to look forward to. Not been a bad season really eh!

  7. Does anyone here seriously think that Platini will sanction video technology.......and lose his ability to 'fix' games to how 'he' wants them to turn out......and who 'he' wants in a final.........cos' I for one dont.

Lets get video technology in...............and Platini out

  8. The Fletcher red card and the Abidal red card were intended to even things out in this masterfully planned UEFA conspiracy. If people can't see what UEFA is up to, you must be blind. The Fletcher red card was given in the Arsenal-ManU match in anticipation of the Abidal red card which was to "cloud" the planned blunders against Chelsea in Chelsea-Barcelona match. Brillintly schemed. Brilliantly executed. My hats off to UEFA !

  10. Yes Technology should be introduce now because chelsea lost. It would have been introduce in the 1st match at nou camp. Ballack would have been out, yellow card for puyol overturned, penalty for barca for the foul on henry by bosingwa. The game would all have been different because chelsea would have been forced to attack and then meet their death, for barca would have found space and ship in goals like in Madrid match. Not playing with 6 defenders 3midfielders and 1 attacker

  11. I have had the same view point for a long time, lets usher in the age of Technology in football so that the public can have fair game.!!

  12. I fully agree. We all want to see the football game without the bad things like referee errors, diving and such thing. I hope that UEFA will take steps in this direction.
