Barry Seeking Reds Move

Tue 10 Jun, 09:09 AM

Gareth Barry wants to join Liverpool in the summer, according to the Aston Villa captain's agent.

Liverpool have made the England international a leading transfer target and have already had one bid rejected by their Premier League rivals.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill is determined to ward off any further interest in the 27-year-old, who has spent his entire career with the club.

But Barry's agent Alex Black says the player has held talks with O'Neill to outline his desire to play UEFA Champions League football.

Black also intimated that Barry is keen to discuss a move to Liverpool after making almost 400 appearances for Villa.

"Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England's game in Trinidad and told him how he feels," Black told The Sun.

"At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it."

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard recently admitted that he is 'desperate' for his good friend to join him at Anfield.

  2. The problem villa have now is that they have had a good season, so there players are creating intrest. the likes of young and abonlaghor have had great seasons so they soon might be off to bigger clubs and that is a shame for villa

  3. if a player wants to move, its time to let go... his heart would not be with the team... so what's the point... there should be a full commitment froom a player if he wants regular football

  6. Barry probably wouldn't be thinking about going at all if it wasn't for having his best 'mate' Steven Gerrard telling him what he thinks is best for him - Gerrard really should keep his gob shut and look after himself... at the end of the day all we've heard is a few lines from his agent, which these days really doesn't mean a lot - other than the agent wanting Villa to pay him more, so he can get paid more.
If Barry does go though - he's one of the few players who does actually deserve a big move - but as mentioned below - not much use if he ends up on Liverpool's bench in Benitez's merry-go-round, instead of being Aston Villa's Captain and England regular.

Liverpool fans should get a bit more real too... they were quite mediocre not so long ago - and haven't won the championship itself in going on 20 years now!! You don't really have a right to be arrogant in recent times.
Had UEFA not decided to create a 'Champions' League instead of a proper European Cup as it was - then you wouldn't have got your hands on the thing at all! lol

  8. Aston Villa fans are so fickle you have a 1 decent season in 15 years and think you are not far behind Liverpool. What good players want to play for Martin O'Neill even when he was at Celtic he could only attract players from Leicester and the likes of John Hartson.

  9. he can go to Liverpool and sit on the bench loose his England place to a player who plays regularly but his bank account will make up for all those lost England caps i am sure

  10. LFC will definately stay ahead Villa next season. Barry should join LFC.

  11. I agree we shouldnt be selling our best players to teams that are very close to us in the league but then again Liverpool will never win the legue espically with a manager like they have at the moment.

But on the other side good luck to Barry hes been good for and to us and I wish him luck even if he is going to Liverpool which I think is a big mistake I cant see him fitting in there and whos to say hell even get to play Champions League football its only going to take them signing a few more decent midfielders and hes out/

  12. I really feel for Villa as Barry is to them as Gerrard is to liverpool. I can't wait to see those 2 play together next season (unlucky villa)!!!!!!!!

  14. what so staniskingofallcreation, youre saying you would rather sell players to teams other than Liverpool. this is also called progress, but backwards, your contradicting yourself there!

From seabass, on Tue 10 Jun 3:40PM
  15. Don't want him to go, but if he has to, i would prefer to see him go to Arsenal or Chelsea because were not that far away from Liverpool's standard and selling them our best players isn't what i would consider progress!

From MichealS, on Tue 10 Jun 2:34PM
  16. liverpool would benefit greatly with barry as barry would benefit greatly from liverpool. He plays better amougnst top quality players, he has been the only one at Villa all his career so needs the change. I agree, it would also be highly beneficial for England and a good cash injection for Villa who could get another couple good players to improve their consistency, below liverpool.

From Harry, on Tue 10 Jun 2:26PM
  17. I Say let him leave, because villa will finnish higher in the league than Liverpool next season with or without him!!!!

From steven c, on Tue 10 Jun 2:10PM
  18. barry for pool would not just be good stevie g but for england . we would have a regular pair in the centre that already know one another inside out . think of the benefits , lampard on the subs bench

From LEE G, on Tue 10 Jun 2:08PM
  19. calm down villa fans barrys been a good servant for the club but there comes a time in a players life when you need to change other wise you could regret decisions you never made .Iam sure Oneil will get a good price, so good luck barry and am sure there will always be a PLACE IN HIS HEART FOR VILLA
