ATP Tour - Ward blasts LTA

Eurosport - Tue, 10 Jun 15:55:00 2008

TENNIS James Ward - 0

Ward, ranked 488th in the world, had come through three rounds of qualifying to reach his moment in the spotlight at Queen's and he produced a gutsy performance before eventually losing 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 to Safin.

The 21-year-old showed he had plenty of grit on the court by pushing the former Australian and US Open champion all the way and then proved he's prepared to fight his corner off it as well.

Ward claimed he was forced to move to Spain to learn his trade at Juan Carlos Ferrero's academy because he received little support from the LTA.

"I went because I wasn't getting any help in England. It was the best academy in the world at the time. I went there, and there were some great players," Ward said.

Asked if he was surprised at the LTA's lack of support for young players he said: "To be honest, yeah. I'm supported a little bit by the LTA. They cover a few costs but it's not everything.

"I mean, I'm not in charge of the LTA, so I can't really say. You'd have to ask them. But they're helping me out a little bit.

"I'm not one to go and ask (for support). I don't think I should have to. I try and let my tennis do the talking rather than me going to beg. But I think they've seen this week that I've earned it myself."

  2. As i understand it lta pays £4k if you are in top 10 in your age group and £2k if in 10 to 20. and about £1k in 20 to 30. This funding goes to the club the player is member of. The coach or somebody at the club decides who get the money. So you have to lick arse, or you get nothing, maybe free squad sessions. one coach said he will not pay for coaching for players who go to private schools as they can afford to pay.

But if you are in top 10 ranking you get taken to overseas tournaments and ranking points you get there are multiplied by 10.
So if you are not in top 10 you can't catch up, unless you can afford to go abroad.
Surely players who are not in top 10 should be funded more to improve, rather than other way round.

  3. At what point do junior players qualify for support from the LTA. My son plays tennis and we pay for everything. It is not a cheap sport and it seems those that have the money can pay for the better coaches and hence get better results. My son looks at tennis as a career, he is only 12 and every opportunity he gets he's out hitting balls, he wants to be a pro. His lack of technical skill at present is mitigated by his hard work, sheer determination and strong will to improve himself, to succeed and be the best. Sadly we don't have the sort of money that can help escalate his tennis improvement to another level, and as we all know the window of opportunity is ever decreasing, however I can't doubt my sons commitment, drive nor his determination. We do what we can and make sacrifices. Champions are made but first they need heart, a strong desire and self belief that they want to achieve, a real hunger. That hunger needs to be recognised and chanelled effectively to achieve success. How can the LTA help in such cases? I do believe we have tennis talent in this country however I see no clear strategy from the LTA on how it recognises a desire to succeed and how it will go about developing it, hence our contribution on the international level is paltry.

  4. The Lta will not support juniors. Money is paid to clubs and if your face does not fit you get nothing. The money spent on Roehampton should have been spent throughout the country.
A player in the top 50 in his age group is not allowed to go to Roehampton with lta "Priority" players as he is not a priority player. So that player is left behind and cannot train and improve. How can they choose "priority " players at a young age.

  5. totally agree, well said Paul M. The funny thing is all the LTA seem to blame the lack of talent in british tennis on is the playstaion and xbox.

  6. Welcome to British Tennis James. There are, as we're told two certainties in life death and taxes there is also a third the LTA couldn't find their collective arses in the dark with both hands. Thirty years plus experience tells me this. Wimbledon money, various 5 and 10 year plans and initiaves a sparkling new national Tennis centre and a host of world class coaches wil make not a jot of difference I'm sad to say. Why, because as a nation we look at sport as just a bit of fun at worst something to give the school thickos something to do and at best something for those 'that can' to reach the dizzy heights of county level. James, remember you're on your own, work hard, very hard and keep on keepin' on.
