Britain's Melanie South celebrated gaining a wild card into Wimbledon by upsetting Sybille Bammer 6-3 7-5 in the second round at Edgbaston.

The 22-year-old, who reached the second round in her only previous Wimbledon performance back in 2006, is now into the third round in Birmingham after downing the fourth seeded Austrian.

It was a particularly gutsy performance from the Surrey girl as she fought back from 0-40 down in the final game to wrap up the match.

South will now play Japan's Aiko Nakamura or Israel's Tzipora Obziler in the third round and if she wins she will become only the second ever British player to reach the quarter-finals of the event - Sue Barker is the other.

However, British number one Anne Keothavong crashed out in the first round as she was beaten 6-3 6-2 by 12th seed Kateryna Bondarenko.

Keothavong, who qualified for Wimbledon without the need of a wild card, will now look for a pre-All England club boost when she competes at 's-Hertogenbosch for the first time next week.
