French Open champion Roger Federer has pulled out of the Halle grass tournament in Germany.
World number two Federer said he emotionally drained after finally winning at Roland Garros last weekend.
"I am sorry to announce that I have decided to withdraw from this week's Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany," Federer said.
"I sincerely apologise to the tournament organisers, my competitors, and my fans in Germany.
"I only hope they will understand that I still feel emotionally overwhelmed and exhausted by the incredible events of the past few days."
A five-times winner on Halle's grass courts in the past six years, Federer was the biggest name in a draw which includes world number four Novak Djokovic and world number nine Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"It is hard for me to admit, but I simply cannot imagine giving my best effort in another tournament right away and I don't want to risk injury if I am not 100 per cent prepared," he said.
"I need to rest and recuperate."
The Swiss became only the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam on Sunday when he beat Sweden's Robin Soderling to win the French Open for the first time.
Federer will want to be at peak fitness to try to win back his Wimbledon title starting on June 22.
Halle tournament organisers said Federer's withdrawal was understandable.
"I have full understanding for Roger Federer. This decision must not have been easy for him," said tournament director Ralf Weber.
"I look forward to the tournament in 2010 - with Roger Federer and a tough field of competitors."

when will those numbnuts at the ATP get their act together & sort the schedule out properly?
too many tournaments....French & Wimbledon slams far far too close together....I mean for gods sake, this is the 21st century, 2009 not 1899.
Pull your fingers out & use some common sense....either that or stand aside & let a few intelligent souls run the show!
lol...really? I found a place that many players are hoo king up with h ot mo dels, seems the club called: __T all mingle Co M___, do you hear this before?
Very wise and well deserving rest for you Roger. I will be looking forward to seeing you at the All England's Club in less than two weeks. Enjoy yourself and all the best of luck to you always...
Have a good rest Roger and come back and win wimbledon for the 6th time.Good luck in all you do hope your baby will be healthy when due in August.
Recently, I discovered a hot place -- Mixedmingle Co m -- where many sexy singles who like sports and chatting there. I'm an open minded girl from US, I also like discuss sports and love with handsome guys on it.
A VERY GOOD DECISION ROGER - WANT TO SEE YOU AT YOUR USUAL BEST FOR WIMBLEDON ---xDx
LOL... I just read this news on some tall interesting place called: ___T allmingle Co M____ the most popular place for h ot mo dels, handsome men me et and mi ngle! u might be surprise what u end up with!!LOL :-)
Everybody knew it the moment he reached the finals at RG, there is no surprise there. With Wimbledon starting only two weeks after RG there is not enough time to recover. He needs to take a short break, he so deserves it. I wonder who makes the schedules though, why the clay season is so long, that at the end some guys arrive exhausted at RG, and the grass season is only 4 weeks, including the two weeks of Wibledon. It makes no sense, however Roger loves Wimbledon so much that i'm sure he'll go there prepaired enough. Go Roger, you gave us something no one before you has given to his fans. Thank you for that!
Federer is very very sensible & intelligent to take a break to prepare for WIMBLEDON
The whole Tennis schedule is too too crowded hectic nowadays ++ the travel with non stop airport searches
I SOO MUCH LIKE FEDERER TO THE EXTENT THAT HE ENTERED THE TENNIS GROUND WITH DETERMINATION,HE HAS THE TENNIS OLAYING SENSESAND HE HAS THE SKILL. I LOVE HIM DEARLY.
Feds being sensible. He two titanic matches in Haas and even more so against Del Potro. He's probably physically shattered as well as emotionally. Think too, Nadal has pulled out of Queens, so he can't defend his points, so Roger might as well play safe and take a break while Nadal can't pull ahead.
Halle is 400 points and Wimbledon 1400 points if I think correctly. He's going after the number one ranking again, no point risking Wimbledon, lots more points to play for and the gs record to beat.
HAHA how silly must Simon Reed feel now? QUOTES from REED after last years Wimbledon final: 'Nadal is the new number one Federers dominance has come to an end and Pete Sampras' record looks a very long way off now, he probably only has one slam in him, but i doubt it.' And look now he has leveled Sampras' record, achieved a career grand slam, looking capable of a sixth consecutve US open title, won two slams since last Wimbledon and made the final of the AO. Eat your words Reed.
Pete Sampras already figured Roger Federer would go down as the greatest tennis player in history.
"What he's done over the past five years has never, ever been done -- and probably will never, ever happen again," Sampras said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "Regardless if he won there or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it."
"I'm obviously happy for Roger," Sampras said. "If there's anyone that deserves it, it's Roger. He's come so close."
"He just is a great, great player that is a credit to the sport and is a positive influence for young kids and just tennis in general," Sampras said. "It looks pretty tough to beat now with 14 majors, and I'm sure he's going to go on and win a lot more."
"Now that he's won in Paris, I think it just more solidifies his place in history as the greatest player that played the game, in my opinion," Sampras said. "I'm a huge Laver fan, and he had a few years in there where he didn't have an opportunity to win majors. But you can't compare the eras. And in this era, the competition is much more fierce than Rod's.""In other respects,I do not think Andy Murray will ever win a major,he's far from being very fit and is a bit weak mentally ,furthermore his attitude on the court sometimes is borderline...to me he won't be the winner of Wimbledon which the whole uk has been expecting I'm afraid".

10 months ago fed lost a thrilling final at wimbledon..."great" journalist Simon reed wrote that if he had lost 3-0 he should better quit tennis. Fed lost 3-2,did not quit, and has won 2 grand slams ever since...very good prediction mr Reed. Fed cried after aus. open and tried very hard not to cry last sunday and all this because of the pressure u all put to him.Thank god I live in greece and listen to the greek comentator. D O M E A F A V O U R MR REED stop writting.eurosport is not a local newspaper. I suggest you started writting about football or hockey maybe...dont write anyhing about fed again.your articles are pathetic
Congratulations FEDERER for winning French title
Moritura, I've been checking it out (in my usual pedantic way), and apparently the change occured around 2001 (prior to the Federer period of dominance), when they decided to use 100% rye grass, which has the advantage of being more resistant to wear and tear, but is spongier, causing the ball to bounce higher. Apparently, rye grows straight up, providing more resistance to the bouncing ball, meaning that it comes through slower. If you search for something like "Wimbledon slower grass", you should be able to find this article, which I think was published in "Time". If on the other hand, you think life's too short to bother, I wouldn't blame you. Either way, I guess Taylor Dent and Michael Llodra won't be causing too many surprises at Wimbledon this year, as they might have done in years gone by. Take Care
