Premier League - Martinez 'to be Wigan boss'

Eurosport - Wed, 10 Jun 09:17:00 2009

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed Roberto Martinez will become the club's new manager.

FOOTBALL Swansea Roberto Martinez - 0

Whelan successfully negotiated terms for Martinez's release from Swansea before holding talks with the former Wigan player.

The deal was effectively sealed at the start of the week.

"I am very excited about securing the services of Roberto Martinez," he told Sky.

Whelan believes the Spaniard can be a major success after stepping up for his first job in the Premier League.

"I hold him in the highest regard," Whelan added. "Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will meet to discuss, amongst other things, finding transfer funds for new players."

Wigan's former manager Steve Bruce left the club last week to join Sunderland, with the Latics pocketing substantial compensation in return for letting him move to Wearside.

A large proportion of that will now be paid to Swansea, who according to reports are keen to speak to Sheffield United player-coach Gary Speed about their vacancy.

Martinez guided Swansea to the League One title in 2007-08 before steering them to an eighth-placed finish in the Championship in the season just ended.

Wigan are expected to formally unveil Martinez as their new boss on Thursday.

  1. I would just like to say about Wigans crowds. When we were a non league team their was Man U Man City Liverpool and Everton plus Bolton had been in the top flight. All these clubs were withing 25 mins drive and not hundreds but it was quoted quite a while ago that aroud 6 thousand people in the bourough of Wigan pay to watch one if the five clubs that i have mentioned. When we got promoted into the league they did not decide to watch Wigan they just carried on supporting the old first division clubs. Put that with the rugbys supporters and you are talking about 35000 people who pay to watch ruby and football in Wigan. Someone mentioned Hull have football and rugby but how many big clubs are near them. I have supported Wigan Ath for 35 years and if they go down under Marinez, then so be it but the team is not as good as it was monthsago and will get worse with the loss of Valencia and others. If we do go down i hope we dont get rid of Roberto and give him time.

  5. To abigail henshall (comment 12). If Luton Town have more fans than Wigan supporters how come Wigan's average attendance was almost 18 thousand and Luton's was just over 6 thousand (which is well in excess of twice as much support). Maybe, you are right and Sky Sports news have got it wrong as its shown throughout the day 24/7. Wigan are not my team but I have enjoyed watching them play and I feel they have done really well to stay in the premiership.

  9. and as 1982 quite rightly pointed out we are only a town, as most prem teams are from cities.but our ground only holds 25,000 max getting crowds going on for 20,000 aint bad.we may never be one of the top 4, but allthe wigan supporters are all very proud of what little wigan have achieved over the last 35 years

  12. Martinez was a gifted player and has followed a natural progression into management. Anyone who saw Swansea play last year will see how his management style was expressed on the field. If Wigan give him the chance he will deliver for them also! Good luck Roberto and thanks for all you have done for the Swans. You WILL be sorely missed.

  13. Mixed reviews, but (given time) Martinez has 'fast tracked' himself into a Premiership management position. Do as well as he has done with The Swans (upper mid-table finish would be comfy), and who knows ?!

    Good luck. Nice guy.

  15. Swansea caught my eye last season and played some of the best championship football I've seen for a while. Just hope Wigan give this guy some time if things don't go well to start with.

  16. to comment 12 what the hell has the size of the crowd got to do with it, they are still the 11th best team in the whole of the prem. so unless you support a higher up team which i very much doubt i am sure he would not have won anything in the fizzy pop league.and it now gives him a chance to pit his wits against top teams and qualify for the europa cup.

  17. Sorry Swan City, but I am sure you will make it with Gary.

  18. If we are such a tiny tiny tiny team why have been in the premiership for four years now and still going strong.
I agree the fan base is not big but it is growing and seeing as Wigan hasn't been playing football that long I think we have done remarkably well seeing as we are traditionally a Rugby Town.
Here's a fact about Wigan it is the only TOWN to have a rugby and football team in the top divisions.
