Premier League - Martinez 'to be Wigan boss'

Eurosport - Wed, 10 Jun 09:17:00 2009

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed Roberto Martinez will become the club's new manager.

Whelan successfully negotiated terms for Martinez's release from Swansea before holding talks with the former Wigan player.

The deal was effectively sealed at the start of the week.

"I am very excited about securing the services of Roberto Martinez," he told Sky.

Whelan believes the Spaniard can be a major success after stepping up for his first job in the Premier League.

"I hold him in the highest regard," Whelan added. "Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will meet to discuss, amongst other things, finding transfer funds for new players."

Wigan's former manager Steve Bruce left the club last week to join Sunderland, with the Latics pocketing substantial compensation in return for letting him move to Wearside.

A large proportion of that will now be paid to Swansea, who according to reports are keen to speak to Sheffield United player-coach Gary Speed about their vacancy.

Martinez guided Swansea to the League One title in 2007-08 before steering them to an eighth-placed finish in the Championship in the season just ended.

Wigan are expected to formally unveil Martinez as their new boss on Thursday.

  5. He was a fantastic footballer for Chester City before Swansea snapped him up for his first managerial effort and he took to it naturally. His vision and intuition on the field was incredible, the team was built around him, but he was in his latter playing days so he made the leap and now he's a Premier League Manager! Really top bloke too, made up for him.

  10. Swansea were a huge threat this season, despite my team beating them twice, they played some of the best football seen in this division for a long time. They were a bit weak at the back though, but now they will struggle. Martinez built that club up in League One, after Jackett put in all the good work in League 2. Another person can take on the good work again, but I think that they may lose 3-4 players and that could send them back towards the lower end.

Cameron W- I cannot wait to go up the Toon. Never seen a match there so bring it on! Everyone wants to beat the Skunks and I believe that you will have a very tough season ahead. Good luck though.
