Agger 'not promised' starting place

Wed 10 Jun, 10:46 AM

Daniel Agger has revealed he was made "no promises" about his first-team place from Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez when he agreed to sign a new contract.

The Danish defender was involved in months of negotiations about a new deal last season, amid claims he had demanded a massive wage rise and assurances about regular first-team football.

Agger said: "In football you can't get any promises from the manager about when you are going to play, and especially not at a club like Liverpool where we have so many talented players all competing for places."

He added: "I believe I am good enough to play regularly in this team and that is what I want to do."

The 24 year-old told the club's website, liverpoolfc.tv: "I believe this team, with the players we have, will be able to challenge for many honours and trophies over the next few years.

"I think I have a chance to play in this team, otherwise I would not be staying at the club.

"And I really like this city, and I like the people who live here. It's not the same as my home town, Copenhagen, but I actually really like where I live. That is important.

"I believe if you have a happy, settled and comfortable life outside the pitch then you're going to be a much better player on it."

  1. who ever said they want owen back must be mad, he done us over to go real, and has been a costly sick note to every club he has been at since, if we go for owen, it shows we are not looking to compete and get the top players.
owen stopped being a top player about 4 years ago, since then he has been rubbish.....ok, i'll put it like this...compare OWEN to TORRES, he is no where near, so why would we want him???????????????????? we need quality like torres, mash, alonso, stevie G, if we not going for players with that sort of quality, we wont compete with the other big boys

  2. Why are so many of you not agreeing with richielee and gallardovoo ? I'm really sorry to say this but I believe the same about Carra : He's got the best heart of Liverpool players I guess (apart from SG of course) but have to admit that he's not that good... I'll add to the debate for having Agger and Skrtel in CB... sorry Carra, you're good in heart but not enough for Liverpool, we need the talents for being champions...

  5. I think you lot at Liverpool are very lucky to have Carragher, Agger and Skrtel - from what I saw last season they all look strong, competitive and accomplished players.

It has to bode well for the future.

Carragher- Heart 10 pts. Skills: 0 pt. In this league, you need both I'm afraid. Agger & Skrtel for me if Liverpool want to win the premier league.

  9. I think Agger is good enough to start every week he just needs to stay injury free to do this, I think in the near future Skrtel & Agger will be our defensive spine but only after they prove to be better that Carragher and that wont be easy
