Championship - Southampton sign £6m Rodriguez

Southampton have begun preparations for life back in the Premier League by breaking their transfer record to sign Burnley's Jay Rodriguez.

FOOTBALL Jay Rodriguez of Burnley - 0

The 22-year-old has long been linked with a move to the south coast and Saints reportedly failed with bids last summer and in January.

However, Nigel Adkins now has his man as Rodriguez has signed a four-year deal at St Mary's after leaving the Clarets for an undisclosed fee.

Press Association Sport understands the deal to be worth £6million, which breaks Southampton's longstanding transfer record, set when they signed Derby's Rory Delap for £4million in 2001.

"I'm really relieved that we've got it sorted now, and it's done," Rodriguez told his new club's official website. "I really can't wait for the start of the season, and the start of pre-season.

"This is a great club, a massive club, and they're where they belong. It's a squad I want to be a part of and it's really exciting.

"As an outsider, you look at the club from where it started, and the drive they have to move up the leagues in quick succession is amazing. The sky is the limit. You see how good the players are at the club.

"They want to push on even higher and carry on the way they're going."

  1. Ref comment by Dirkle *19. Its called career progression mate. He's a young lad with huge potentialand ambition who wants to play in the top flight.Would you honestly deny that to anyone? Sure he wants to earn more money but who doesnt? If Burnley showed the potential to play in top flight and offer him what he's worth,I'm sure he'd have stayed with you? We had to sold Chamberlain reluctantly. We werent going to fold if without the money but when a player wants to leave, the outcome is inevitable.

  2. Jay, You were all ready at a great club lets be honest you did this for financial benefit. Burnley seem now to have accepted that they will always be in the lower flight of football, no money and a sensible refusal to get in the rat race that has been so disastrous financially for most clubs such as Blackburn and Bolton. I can remeber in the 60s when they sold Jimmy Mcillroy the number of fans who refused ever to watch Burnley again. JayRod is no Jiommy Mcillroy or Ray Pointer he his just indicitive of the financial madness that is destroying English football. Well done Burnley as a lifelong supporter I have accepted the fact you will never return to the top league because the idiot element in football are more than prepared to sell their collective souls financially for what they hope is a quick fix.

Well they are back in the top flight now where money talks and you can spend what you don't have, what happened to the creditors they owed money to??????????
