Southampton striker David McGoldrick is expecting "a big season" as he looks to secure his future at St Mary's.The 20-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Notts County before signing for Saints in 2005, was a prolific goalscorer at youth and reserve-team level, scoring 44 goals in the 2006/07 reserve season.
But the youngster is yet to gain a regular first-term berth in the Championship, appearing just 18 times - 14 of those from the bench. However, McGoldrick believes in his own ability and is keen to prove to boss Jan Poortvielt just why he deserves a new contract next season.
He told the Southern Daily Echo: "It's definitely a big season for me. Last season was a poor one for me. I went out on loan at Port Vale and things didn't go well. I came back and played a few games under Pearson but nothing special.
"I'm 20 now and I've got to start getting regular games. I've got one year left here so I can start doing my thing here. I've got belief in my own abilities and I know I can score goals in this division - I just need to go over the white line and show it."
