Steve Tilson's Southend United side began pre-season in subdued fashion with a 2-0 win at Great Wakering Rovers.New-boys Paul Furlong and Osei Sankofa both featured as Tilson experimented by fielding different teams in each half.

The Shrimpers were made to work hard for victory and it took until just after the hour to break the deadlock as Lee Barnard converted a penalty after Adam Barrett had been fouled.

Nicky Bailey completed the scoring 10 minutes from time with a well-struck volley.
