Darren Turner hopeful of maintaining strong testing form as the BTCC heads to Snetterton for the sixth round of the year.
Darren Turner says he is confident of a strong weekend at Snetterton this weekend although the SEAT Sport UK man admits there is work to do despite the strong performance shown by the team in the recent two-day HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship test.
Then, Turner and team-mate Jason Plato dominated the time-sheets to pace all four sessions held at the Norfolk venue, with Plato ending the test with the quickest time and Turner not far behind in second.
That has boosted confidence going into a weekend where the diesel-powered Leon is expected by many to be the car to beat, with a series of low-speed corners leading onto long straights should play to the strengths of the TDi engine with its extra torque.
Turner himself is no stranger to the Snetterton venue having run there extensively in the past - mainly due to the fact that the circuit is regularly used by sportscar teams for testing purposes - and he said he was looking for big points from the weekend to boost his chances into the second half of the season.
However, despite the pace shown in the test, Turner said it was vital to replicate the form in the race weekend itself.
"Snetterton feels like my home circuit," he said. "I used to live in nearby Derham and I've done a lot of laps around the track in a lot of different cars over the years - far more than any other circuit anywhere in the world. Of all the circuits in the BCC calendar, this is high on the list of places that will suit the Leon TDI.
"We did well at the test, better than we expected, but we've still got a lot of work to do. We now have to turn those test results into big points and begin to claw back some points on Vauxhall and Fabrizio Giovanardi. I'm eighth and Jason's fourth in the drivers' standings, so it's important we both score well at Snetterton and together give ourselves a boost in the battle for the manufacturers' title. If we can leave Snetterton with a big score, we'll have something really positive to build on for the remainder of the season."
