Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been denied early release with an electronic tag and must serve up to another month in jail.
Barton and his club had hoped he would be freed early next week and given a tag forcing him to observe a curfew.
But the 25-year-old has been deemed not to fit the right criteria for early release as he is a violent offender and committed his last offence while on bail.
It will come as a crushing blow for Barton - and his club - as he will spend more weeks locked up and miss most of the crucial pre-season.

he should be kicked out of football the way he behaved, not given a second bite of the cherry.
I don't see how that is a crushing blow for Newcastle United, the Toon haven't said he is staying and they can hardly wheel him out for the first game of the season as some kind of star player.
He's a complete liability, which has just been endorsed by the prison service. Give him a job on the burger van at the Gallowgate end, but never put him in another black & white shirt.
