Benitez: Alonso Could Stay At Reds

Thu 10 Jul, 07:09 PM

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is unsure whether Xabi Alonso will leave the club to join Juventus.

Alonso is a confirmed target for Juventus, but the Italian club have been unable to agree a fee for the Spanish midfielder.

Benitez has admitted that he is waiting to learn whether Juventus are willing to increase their bid for the 26-year-old.

The former Real Sociedad schemer has said he is happy to stay at Anfield, and Benitez also appears keen to keep his compatriot at the club.

"The situation with Alonso has not changed," said Benitez.

"Juventus made an offer that was not good enough and now we are just waiting. I do not know, really, whether that will go through.

"Xabi wants to stay because he is happy here, but he also knows that Juventus is a top side.

"I have talked to him, he knows my ideas and he knows why. So we will try to find a solution for him, for us, and the best for the club."

Meanwhile, Liverpool have announced the signing of 17-year-old Dutch forward Vincent Lucas Weijl.

The teenager, who came through the academy at AZ Alkmaar, has signed a three-year deal and will go into the reserves squad.

  1. We are gonna lose lucas, leto and masch for the start of the season, if we get barry or not we are gonna the two holding midfielders..only other option is plessis and hes not ready yet, alonso is class, yes he had a dip in form, but after injury, all players go through it, so did voronin, keep xabi!!!, theres no better passer in the liverpool squad or premiership, maybe even europe!!

  2. Barry is quality, Alonso is quality, not bothered either way. Barry is left footed though, might provide better balance and he can play left back too. However he ain't gunna play in Kewell's place (Sami s comment 8) now is he? That'll be Babel remember. Barry/Alonso is a side issue, we need to replace Supercrouch and get a right winger, Villa/Keane, and Bentley/Milner for me. Why did we sign Voronin anyway? And how did Kuyt play so many games on the right wing? COME ON RAFA! Let's 'ave it!

  3. listen,we dont need barry or dont need to sell alonso,4 gods sake we got gerrard and mascharano as well, sick midfield.we just need a left winger and a striker now and were sorted..but it this way..never underate liverpool cuz its only a matter of time we win the league..

  4. KEvin D if i you cant remember against Man utd at old trafford straight after Mascherano got sent off Alsono did a 40 m pass that went straight to Man Utd. Brry would of calmed down and showed composure and not thrown the ball away when we are a man down. i agree Xabi is quality but not world class and we need to sell Voronin to get the money to buy a quality striker.

  5. What are you on about joshmcmullin alonso give the ball away about three times in his first two season's, he's a quality / worldclass player player. You might think 40 yard passes to players feet are wastefull but I don't.

Spend the money on a forward and please get rid or voronin rafa

    good luck crouchy

  6. we need an extra, consistant midfielder in the middle and Barry is perfect for the role and he is a star player!! essential for liverpool if we are going to have a shot at the title!! to many times Xabi is injuried or wasting the ball!!

  8. personally i think barry has been vastly underated for along long time now, he would be a great addition to the first team and is consistant. fair enough hes being overpriced but thats down to martin o neil, not barry or benitez? you only have to ask any villa fan and they will say how consistant and ever present he is. liverpool fan now for 24 yrs and things havent looked this rosy for along time, so keep up the good work rafa!! :)
