Three-times Vietnam coach Alfred Riedl has taken over as boss of strugglers Laos, with a Vietnamese club paying his salary.

Austrian Riedl (pictured left), 59, who became a football icon in Vietnam after steering them to the 2007 Asian Cup quarter-finals, will coach the under-23 team ahead of the Southeast Asian Games in December, which cash-strapped Laos is hosting.

"They couldn't score a single goal at the last SEA Games two years ago in Thailand," the former Austria Vienna and Royal Antwerp striker said.

"We want better results - that's it."
